Tennis player speaks out after video of young boy’s cap being taken at US Open goes viral

‘I just missed it’

A video from the US Open showing a man taking a young boy’s cap from Polish tennis player Kamil Majchrzak went viral, and he has now spoken out about it.

The incident happened on August 28, after Majchrzak won a tough five-set match against Russia’s Karen Khachanov. After the game, the tennis player went over to Court 11 to sign autographs and meet spectators. He took off his cap, intending to give it to a young boy nearby, but before the boy could take it, a man standing next to him grabbed it and put it in his bag. The clip quickly went viral.

The man has since been identified. Majchrzak told the New York Post that he is Piotr Szczerek, a Polish CEO who runs the paving company Drogbruk. The incident drew a lot of criticism, with many calling his actions “selfish.” According to Dextero, Szczerek later released a statement saying the online reaction was “disproportionate.”

The tennis player has now spoken out about the situation

Kamil Majchrzak has since addressed the situation himself. He admitted that he had not noticed what had happened at the time. “I was pointing, giving the hat, but I had a lot going on after my match, after being super tired and super excited for the win. I just missed it, I had like a dead look, if you know what I mean,” he said.

Speaking about Szczerek, the man who took the cap, Majchrzak added, “I’m sure the guy was also acting in the moment of heat, in the moment of emotions. Obviously, it was some kind of confusion. He also wanted to make things right, so I gave him the credentials for Brock’s mum on the same platform I was using to contact her. So, maybe he can make things right himself.”

What started as a negative moment ended on a happier note for the boy. Majchrzak tracked him down and gave him a signed cap and a few other keepsakes. On Saturday, he shared a video on Instagram showing him meeting the delighted boy, Brock, and his family. He handed over the gifts, took photos, and chatted with them.
