Sheffield says goodbye to The Leadmill: Your best memories

You did what in front of your flatmates mum??

Last Friday, iconic gig venue and student haven The Leadmill said its final goodbyes to its home of more than forty years.

Signing off with a smashing set from Miles Kane, and a prior performance from Sheffield prodigal son Richard Hawley, it’s safe to say their last few weeks wont be forgotten.

As one of the favourite student nights out in the city, we asked over on Instagram for your fondest memories of the place. From five pound rounds to some classic Leadmill shenanigans, these precious anecdotes prove that Leadmill truly had it all. And yes, these get worse as they go one.

“The dance circle in the indie room from Tyler Creator night”

The only thing that got me through lectures was knowing there was a Leadmill themed night somewhere in the week!

“Falling asleep in there during freshers week, was one of the best naps of my life”

We’ve all done freshers too hard but this is a new level my friend.

“Leadmill Fridays during first year!”

Forever a classic.

“I have a top 10 vid of all time from my first year in leadmill a few years ago.”

So happy for you but I’m afraid all my videos from Leadmill are either recorded mirror selfies in the toilets or smoky, blurred shots of the small room.

“Dick and Dom!”

Anyone else come home covered in silly string with an inflatable seagull in arm?

“Doing a wig night in my friend group and going to Leadmill!”

One question, did those wigs make it home?

“The Arctic Monkeys night will forever live rent free in my mind!”

I don’t think Fluorescent Adolescents goes harder anywhere else.

“I love the photo booth because it’s got room for everyone, I have like 15 up on my wall!”

So many precious memories (that I imagine you don’t remember making).

“ABBA NIGHT 2024 FRESHERS WEEK!”

The fact Leadmill never had a dress code and yet people turned up and turned out in 70s vibes for ABBA (as they should).

“I met my best friend at a Taylor Swift 2014 club night in Freshers Week 2023!”

What a wholesome memory.

“Once someone offered me what I thought was a free drink, later discovered it was urine.”

Okay, a lot less wholesome of a memory.

“When I was having a bit too much fun, and too many £5 rounds, I accidentally set the alarm off by leaning on the doors in the third bar.”

We’ve all done that! Right? Right guys?

“When the guy in the wheelchair got lifted up in the crowd in the middle of the dance floor.”

How will Leadmill ever be topped?

“Once made out with my flatmate in front of her mum.”

Wow. Just, wow.

Leadmill you will forever be missed but fear not students of Sheffield, their classic Leadmill Friday is continuing at Foundry on the Uni of campus from September! As well as other scheduled events going ahead at other venues around the city.
