Only one person is allowed to call Diddy by his real name, and you’ll never guess who

It’s so random!

As the Diddy trial continues in New York, you’re probably hearing the rapper’s real name Sean Combs a lot. However, only one person is actually allowed to call him that, aside from his mother.

The musician has been known by many different names over his career, including Puffy, Puff Daddy, P Diddy, Love, and Brother Love – but never just Sean.

During a 2023 episode of James Corden’s Carpool Karaoke, he said: “I was born Puffy. Okay, and then I became P Diddy. Then they called me Diddy because I was so pretty. And then Puff Daddy.”

Diddy then revealed the one bizarre person who’s allowed to call him by his real birth name Sean, and it’s Jay-Z!

“There’s only one person, and I call him Shawn. That’s Jay-Z. We call each other Sean. Nobody else could call me Sean. There’s not a single person, outside of my mother, that should be calling me Sean,” he said.

Jay-Z’s real name is Shawn Corey Carter, so it seems as though they made a pact at some point that they’d call each other by their real names because they have the same one.

The rapper clarified that the only other person who calls him Sean is his mother, usually when he’s in trouble, but for everyone else it’s not on the “approved list”.

Diddy now prefers to go by the name Love, and he legally changed his name from Sean John Combs to Sean Love Combs in 2021.

He shared a picture of his new license on Instagram in May 2021 and wrote: “Look what I just got in the mail today… 🖤💫✨⚡️IT’S OFFICIAL!!! WELCOME TO THE LOVE ERA.”

“Imma need y’all to take me seriously on this one!!!” he added with the hashtag “#TheLoveEra”.

When asked why he changed his name on The Graham Norton Show, Diddy explained that there have been different “eras” to his career and each one has had a different name, like Puff Daddy and P Diddy.

“Now this is the ultimate goal. I have become Love,” he said. However, the rapper clarified that he still goes by Diddy to most people.
