The awkward way ‘fish and a rice cake’s’ girlfriend found out about his viral meme past
They’re gonna save so much money bulk buying rice cakes together!
You might not be fully aware of Danny Andrews, but you’ll undoubtedly know him by another name: The fish and a rice cake dude. After appearing in BBC Three’s 2007 documentary Baby Faced Bodybuilders, Danny reached new heights of internet fame when his unique diet for the Mr Cumbria bodybuilding competition unintentionally created one of the most quotable lines in meme history.
“Eight o’clock in the morning I’ll have fish and a rice cake. At 10 o’clock, I’ll have fish. “At 12 o’clock, I’ll have fish and a rice cake. At two o’clock, I’ll have fish. At four o’clock – just before I train – I’ll have fish and a rice cake. I’ll train, I’ll have me fish,” he said. “I’ll come home, have some more fish, with a rice cake, and then have some more fish before I go to bed.”
Danny has popped up a few times in recent years on his quest to have a second place setting during his feeding times, from First Dates to Celebs Go Dating. Danny signed up for Love Triangle last year, which is where he met Sadie Bass, a 29-year-old social media manager from Bristol. But as you can imagine, broaching the subject of being an internet meme requires some delicacy – not that Danny’s coming out moment was delicate in the slightest.
“I knew of the video, I used to live with my cousin who would watch the meme. He showed me it, and my friends and I would quote it all the time and laugh about it,” Sadie said. “When I met Danny, I didn’t realise he was the guy from the meme.”

Her realisation came at the Trafford Centre, Manchester, when a “group of lads” insisted on taking pictures with the fish and a rice cake man in the flesh.
“In the Trafford Centre people were asking for photos, so I had to explain it to Sadie, but she didn’t judge me or find it cringey, she thought it was funny and by then we were fully together so it hasn’t affected the relationship,” Danny recalled, as Sadie added, “I was confused, I was thinking he was some big celebrity. He awkwardly told me he was the fish and rice cake man – I thought it was hilarious.”
Then it really clicked that she was “dating a legend”, a fully fledged member of “British meme royalty.”

The fish and a rice cake guy is getting on well with his girlfriend
The fish and the rice cake guy and his girlfriend have been together (publicly) for a full eight months now; they had to keep the seven months before a secret due to the show’s NDA. He fully credits reality TV as the catalyst for their successful relationship.
He said: “I wouldn’t be her type normally as she doesn’t go for gym types, and vice versa, she’s into poetry and is a bit more introverted than me. Gym lads tend to have a bad stereotype, and I must look like a prat, because everyone always says they’re surprised when I meet them in person.

“If I had met her on a night out it probably wouldn’t have worked because of preconceived ideas about how we both look, so the show has worked. Or if we had met on a dating app, she would have definitely swiped past me, which is why I’m so glad we did the show, because we had a spark.”
Danny, his business partner Zack McGuirk, and five other people are now involved in a food business on you’re never going to guess what: RICECAKES! They launched in 2024, and after a successful first year, are looking to break into the supermarket sector.
“It’s mainly online sales off the website at the moment and to get to the next level we need to get into supermarkets – and we’re in talks right now,” he added.
“All I’ve worked on is changing Britain’s first meme into a brand – and I think I’ve just about managed to do it.”
