These are 10 things you will understand if you study at KCL’s Strand campus
Special shoutout to Timothée Chalamet and his Lime bike
If you’re a student at King’s College London’s Strand campus, you already know that life here is a unique experience.
Positioned right in the heart of central London, it offers incredible views of the Thames, historic buildings, and endless food spots—yet somehow, it still finds ways to test your patience daily.
Between busy libraries, questionable Wi-Fi speeds, and the constant battle for seating, studying here is as frustrating as it is unforgettable. So, here are 10 things that only Strand students will truly understand.
1. The dream of the Maughan Library
Everyone talks about studying at the Maughan Library like it’s a dream, but let’s be real—finding a seat is a battle, especially during exam season. And those Harry Potter vibes quickly fade when you realise how cold it gets in winter and how creepy it becomes at night.
2. The eternal struggle of finding seating
Whether it’s at Chapters, Somerset House, or the Maughan Library, finding a seat is a near-impossible task. You’ll either have to hover awkwardly, ready to pounce at the first sign of movement, or accept defeat and sit on the floor.
3. Bush House elevators are a chore
Bush House is a beautiful building, but waiting to find a lift that is empty enough for you to squeeze in can seem impossible. Sometimes, walking up the stairs just seems like the easier option.
4. Strand’s food scene is a blessing (and a curse)
With so many restaurants, cafés, and street food options nearby, you’ll never run out of choices. But your bank account? That’s another story.

5. The horror of crossing Waterloo Bridge
Braving the icy wind, dodging cyclists who act like they own the road, and questioning all your life choices—just to attend a single class on the other side of the river.
By the time you arrive, your hair is a mess, your hands are frozen, and you look like you’ve fought a hurricane.
Was it worth it? Probably not, but congrats on making it to class.
6. The King’s Building Wi-Fi is unreliable at best
You’d think that in one of the world’s top universities, Wi-Fi wouldn’t be an issue. Yet, somehow, King’s Building remains a dead zone– as per most of Strand Campus to be honest. Eduroam, count your days.
7. The Vault’s curly fries
If you know, you know. The Vault’s curly fries are legendary, and no other explanation is required.
8. Somerset House ice rink
Every winter, Somerset House transforms into a magical ice rink, making it nearly impossible to focus on lectures when you could be gliding across the ice instead. The temptation to skip class has never been stronger.
9. Iconic events from King’s societies
Whether it’s the Jude Bellingham lookalike competition, the funeral of the eighth floor of Bush House, or random TikToks being filmed in the middle of campus, there’s never a dull moment. King’s societies truly know how to keep things interesting.
10. Timothée Chalamet passing by Strand on a lime bike before a premiere
Yes, this happened. And if you were lucky enough to witness it, you probably have a new benchmark for what counts as a surreal university experience.
