Kim K to Leo DiCaprio: All the celebs under fire for ‘tone deaf’ behaviour during LA fires

Some of them deleted the posts after receiving criticism online

At least 25 people are now said to have died in the LA wildfires, with over 180,000 residents being displaced since they broke out last week. The numerous blazes have brought about the loss of entire areas of the city, from schools to businesses and homes, as well as significantly impacting local wildlife.

Many celebrities have also evacuated or lost their homes, with others speaking out on the fires, issuing statements of support or ways to help communities affected.

However, a number of other celebrities have been criticised for their responses or behaviour during the LA wildfires. Here’s a look.

Jojo Siwa

Former Dance Moms star turned social media personality and singer Jojo Siwa has also come under fire for her behaviour as her home city burns.

In a now deleted video posted by her girlfriend Katherine Ebbs, Siwa is seen packing a car with “essentials” incase of evacuation from her multi-million dollar Tarzana mansion.

Amongst these so-called essentials were an array of designer items, including the outfit worn in her Karma music video which was seen at the IHeartRadio Music awards. Jojo said she would be “devastated” if she lost it.

Despite this, she did later post a heartfelt video to her Instagram, asking viewers to read the caption, where she raises awareness about the need for donations at the “LA Dream Center”, which is providing aid to those who have lost everything in the fires.

Leonardo DiCaprio

Titanic and The Wolf of Wall Street star Leonardo DiCaprio has also come under fire from many on the internet after leaving Los Angeles in a private jet to escape the wildfires, despite being a self proclaimed “climate activist.”

This came after he was spotted landing in Mexico with his girlfriend Vittoria Ceretti.

Many were quick to call out the actor, who has been vocal on climate issues for many years, and criticised his “hypocrisy”.

However, the LA native has since pledged a donation of 1 million dollars towards the relief fund for the fires in Los Angeles, which he confirmed on his Instagram Story, but many are still outraged by the hypocrisy, due to his prominent role with a number of natural and climate conservation efforts.

Kendall Jenner and Hailey Bieber

Kendall and Hailey went out for sushi at a fancy Los Angeles restaurant last week, on January 7th, the first day the LA fires broke out. The pair were extensively paparazzied on their way to the restaurant and the internet was not impressed with their behaviour.

Following the backlash, Kendall’s tequila company later issued a statement on Instagram where it detailed how to donate to affected communities, and Hailey’s skincare company, Rhode, posted a similar statement on its Instagram Story.

Khloe Kardashian

Moving onto another member of the world’s most famous reality TV dynasty; Khloe Kardashian has also been slammed many for “hypocrisy” after her criticism of LA Mayor Karen Bass.

Kim had shared that she was “not a fan” of Mayor Bass’ reaction to the fires, as she reshared a video of the LA fire department chief Kristen Crowley saying that the city had “failed them” after cutting the budget to their department.

While many have been critical of numerous political figures in the midst of the crisis, including Bass and California Governor Gavin Newsom, reality TV star Yvette Nicole Brown was quick to blast Khloe Kardashian on social media for her previous excessive usage of water during droughts in LA back in 2022, sharing the link to a Rolling Stone article criticising Kardashian and her sister Kim.

Khloe, however, has posted extensively about the fires online and shared access to support and services.

Jason Oppenheim

The Selling Sunset star has been harshly criticised online for a “completely out of touch” article he wrote for The Daily Mail.

Titled “Selling Sunset star JASON OPPENHEIM: LA’s stupid politicians failed my celebrity real estate clients”, it went off on a rant at California’s politicians for failing to protect the homes of his celebrity clients against the fires.

He also suggested that property prices in Los Angeles would tank as a result, and asked “haven’t these people suffered enough” at the prospect of his wealthy clients losing money on the value of their land if they tried to sell in the future.

While Jason has also been offering support to those who have lost their homes in the wildfires on social media, many online have been quick to blast him for his words in his article, suggesting he is placing more emphasis on wealthy clients, ignoring the plight of the thousands of ordinary Californians who have lost their entire livelihoods and are not as well placed to rebuild them.

One Reddit user wrote: “This whole article reeks of ‘wealthy man complains that his wealthy clients lost their multi-million dollar homes’. Jason is an issue-motivated virtue signaller, and by that I mean he’s only whining and bitching now because it has a direct impact on his multi-million profit margins.”

However, Jason also emphasised in the article that he donated $100,000 (£82,000) to the Los Angeles fire department. The Daily Mail says this was “largely in an effort to bring some attention to the need to fund them more.”

Kim Kardashian

Kim Kardashian has received sharp backlash from many online after promoting the sale on her Skims website on her social media amidst the destruction ensuing in her home city.

Her company Skims posted numerous times on its social media sites about their 50 per cent off sale, and Kim reshared a post promoting the sale on her Story last Wednesday.

Kim has also been criticised by neighbours, alongside other celebrities such as Kevin Hart and Sylvester Stallone, for continually excessively exceeding her water limits prior to the fires, as she is able to “afford the fines”.  A shortage of resources such as water have been pivotal in the difficult response to the wildfires.

However, she has since released a statement, sharing pictures of the fires and the first responders on Instagram. Describing her heartbreak in the caption, she wrote: “My heart breaks for my city. Continuing to pray for all of those affected and so grateful for those fighting hard to protect and save this city.”
