Liam Payne charges: Exactly who has been charged over his death and what with

Two are accused of negligent homicide

In the last few days, there have been updates following the death of Liam Payne, and five people are facing charges. Liam passed away at the Casa Sur Hotel in Buenos Aires, on 16th October.

On the day of his death, Liam Payne is said to have spent the afternoon in the lobby of the Casa Sur Palermo Hotel. His friend Rogelio Nores last saw him there. The 31-year-old died after falling from a third-floor balcony. Now, five people face charges over his death.

According to Sky News, three people have been charged with negligent homicide. This is similar to manslaughter in UK law. Two have been charged with supplying drugs to the singer.

Those facing negligent homicide charges are Roger Nores, Gilda Martin and Esteban Grassi. Roger Nores has been described as a friend and “rep” of Liam’s, whilst Gilda Martin was a manager at the hotel, and Esteban Grassi a receptionist. A hotel employee, Ezequiel Pereyra, and waiter, Braian Paiz, have been charged with supplying drugs on two occasions.

Court documents against Nores state he allegedly failed “to fulfil his duties of care, assistance and help” and “abandoned [Payne] to his luck knowing that he was incapable of fending for himself and knowing that he suffered from multiple addictions.”

Gilda Marten allegedly failed to stop Liam Payne from being taken to his hotel room moments before his death. The hotel’s receptionist allegedly told people to “drag” Payne, who could not stand up, to his room, instead of keeping him safe.

Under Argentina’s legal system, the prosecutor’s office gathers evidence which it then presents to a judge, who will then decide whether a case will proceed to trial.

According to a statement released by the prosecutor’s office, Judge Laura Bruniard has already taken the decision to proceed to the next stage. “What happened was foreseeable,” the judge said.

She added: “They didn’t act maliciously with regards to the singer’s death, but they were reckless in facilitating his transfer to his room by taking him there. They created a legally unacceptable risk and Liam Payne’s death is the result.”

Negligent homicide carries a sentence of one to five years, while supplying drugs carries a sentence of up to 15 years.
