Alicia Silverstone posted a video during her London visit where she starts eating a plant from someone’s yard. “Okay, I’ve discovered something and I can’t work out what it is and I need your help,” Alicia says in the video. “I just bit into it because I was on the street and we were discussing whether this was a tomato or not. It’s definitely not because these leaves. Those are the leaves, so what the heck is this?
“If I bite it, I don’t think you’re supposed to eat this. It’s almost like a pepper. Does anyone know what this is? I need someone to tell me. I’m in England.”
The video has gone viral on Twitter, with one concerned fan saying “This TikTok of a confused Alicia Silverstone eating a fruit off a bush from someone’s front yard in London blissfully unaware that it’s actuall a very poisonous form of deadly nightshade. She’s not posted since either.”
Her last socials post was an Instagram story 11 hours ago.
The comment section believes it to be a Jerusalem cherry. “The Jerusalem Cherry is a member of the nightshade family, a large and diverse family of plants which includes both poisonous species and food plants such as potatoes, aubergines and tomatoes,” explains The Joy of Plants website. “The shrub is native to Central America where the plant is so vigorous that it’s sometimes viewed as a weed.”
The website explains how the Jerusalem cherry is poisonous and should not be ingested and kept out of reach of children and dogs.
