The ‘dark thought’ texts and diary entries mother Lindsay Clancy wrote before killing three children

In the ongoing murder trial of Lindsay Clancy, the court has been presented with texts and diary entries the mother wrote before she is accused of killing her three children. She has pleaded not guilty.

We’re now into the third week of the murder trial. Massachusetts, US, mother Clancy has been charge with three counts of murder, accused of the killings of her children: Cora aged five, Dawson aged three, and Callan aged eight months.

Prosecutors have claimed Clancy “acted intentionally, rationally and swiftly” when she strangled the three children, whereas her defence has claimed she is not criminally responsible, as she was in the midst of a psychotic episode stemming from postpartum mental illness.

The mother has not yet taken to the stand in her trial, and so far has only communicated briefly with the judge. As the trial has been going on, Clancy has been seen sobbing during testimony, and she shook in court as details were shared from the autopsy of her son.

‘We were moving in a positive direction’

During the recent days in the trial, the court has heard from people who knew Clancy personally. One of which was a friend called Amy Bevins, who has known her for nearly three decades. She told jurors she communicated over text with Clancy, just days before the murders took place.

In January 2023, days before she killed her children, Clancy said over text to her friend that medication she was taking had caused her to have “some dark thoughts.” The texts have been used in court to try and paint a picture of her state of mind at the time.

As per CNN, Amy Bevins said: “She had shared that she had been taking a medication that caused her to have some dark thoughts but that she was going to, or had been, tapering off that medication and was trialing new ones that would remove those side effects and be more helpful and therapeutic to what she needed.”

She added that the tone of the conversations were “hopeful”, and said: “I remember it being something where there was conveying of hope, and that it was going to be a, you know, we were moving in a positive direction.”

Another friend, named Bethany DeCollibus, described an exchange she had with Clancy around one of the children’s birthdays in January, when Clancy had said she was struggling with sleep. “She responded that things haven’t gotten any better, and that she feels like a zombie,” DeCollibus said in court.

Elsewhere in the testimony, the family’s former nanny described Lindsay Clancy as a “wonderful mother”. She said: “I observed a wonderful mom who loved her kids… She was concerned about their safety, and Callan eating and sleeping. She was a wonderful mother.”

‘I want help. I want to be well’

Diary entries were also read out in court. They appear to show Clancy writing about her declining mental health, in the time before the deaths.

“It’s like I’m so desperate to get a mental break from taking care of everyone that my mind is trying to make something physically wrong with me,” she wrote.

She also said she felt “guilty” and was struggling with sleep-training her youngest, Callan. “I want help. I want to be well,” she wrote. The trial continues.
