We caught up with ex-Manchester lecturer and blogging sensation Inthefrow

She said it was her hair that made her stand out

Victoria Magrath is the fashionista behind Inthefrow, the fashion blog with 33186 followers.

She’s the Company Magazine Personal Style Blog 2014 Winner who’s been featured on ASOS, Missguided, Selfriges Magazine and in Vogue Portugal.

The award-winning blogger graduated from the University of Manchester with a first class degree in Design Management for Fashion Retailing, before continuing to lecture there.

Last week she returned to Manchester to discuss her experience as a blogger and what else she has on the cards for the future.

At the age of just 26, fashion maven Victoria Magrath has a successful fashion and beauty blog whose YouTube incarnation boasts 250,000 subscribers and over 500,000 followers on Instagram.

She made a huge impact on the fashion community, capturing a wealth of readers with her down to earth personality, stylish attire and pastel-hued hair.

Like most bloggers, Victoria started Inthefrow after being inspired by other blogs and YouTube channels she followed online. She came up with the idea during her PhD and within her first six months, Inthefrow won the Company Magazine Best Newcomer Blog Award and a year later, the award for Best Established blog.

She had no idea how popular her blog would become but she told us it wasn’t easy: “I worked really hard to get my blog to where it is today, it was often quite stressful but sometimes a little stress is what kept me motivated, it’s all about balance.”

A mix of high street and designer brands help to create Victoria’s effortless style, inspired by bloggers such as Angelica Blick, Kristina Bazan and Chiara Ferragni.

Talking about the name for her infamous blog, she said: “Deciding on a name for your blog can be tricky.”

Victoria got her inspiration from a lyric from one of her favourite songs called Front Row by Alanis Morissette. The lyric reads “I’m in the front row with pop colour,” which she then shortened to something more memorable.

She said: “Your blog name is really important, you must try and pick something that is original and easy to remember if someone were to see it or hear it once.”

When asked about the key to creating a good quality, stand out blog Victoria explained how it needs to be easy to navigate and look good: “Include inspiring images and invest in a good camera if you can, it doesn’t have to be expensive.”

Talking about the hair that everyone knows her for, she also highlighted the importance of making yourself stand out: “Have your own unique selling point, whether it is how you style yourself or something else.

“It is good to have something a bit different about you, mine was my purple hair.”

She told us that travelling has to be one of the best perks of her career.

As a professional blogger, Victoria has been able to travel to some pretty cool places including the likes of Japan, the Maldives and New York.

But to get to see the world, it’s taken Victoria time and effort, she said: “Make sure you are consistent – whether you are active on one or five media platforms, it doesn’t matter, be sure that you have the time and patience to put into it.”

Her final advice for aspiring bloggers is to work hard: “be unique and create something that both you and your readers love!”

Where we would see Victoria next? She told us that eventually she wants to get a bigger ambassadorship for a brand like L’Oréal and  have her own line of products, but there is still so much she wants to accomplish in terms of blogging first.
