Ofcom has confirmed that Love Island 2022 was the most complained about TV show of the year. The misogynistic and bullying behaviour on Love Island and Matt Hancock’s appearance on I’m A Celebrity were top two most complained about moments on television this year. It was Love Island’s movie night episode that saw Ofcom receive nearly 2,500 complaints after the boys were called out for misogynistic and sexist behaviour.

In Ofcom’s annual report, it was revealed it received 36, 543 complaints about more than 9,500 issues in 2022. Alongside I’m A Celebrity and Love Island, Ofcom received a number of complaints about This Morning over the programme’s game Spin to Win being criticised for giving away money for people’s energy bills.

Here are all the most complained about televisions show moments of 2022:

1. Love Island movie night episode

Love Island became the most complained about television show of 2022, with over 3,000 complaints in one week following the show’s movie night episode. Viewers complaints were relating to alleged misogynistic and bullying behaviour by Love Island contestants in the villa. During the episode, Luca Bish accused Gemma of flirting with Billy despite her denying it and Davide repeatedly called Ekin-Su a liar during a number of arguments.

2. Matt Hancock’s appearance on I’m A Celebrity

Ofcom received thousands of complaints about Matt Hancock being on I’m A Celebrity from November 6th to November 27th. Matt Hancock was met with backlash for appearing on the show due to his handling of the Covid-19 pandemic.

3. Friday Night Live

Ofcom received 1,400 complaints when Jordan Gray performed a song before stripping off in front of the audience. The performance ended in Gray ripping off her clothes and playing the keyboard.

4. Love Island’s snog, marry, pie challenge

Another Love Island episode which also had complaints relating to alleged misogynistic and bullying behaviour was during the snog, marry, pie challenge. Many viewers complained about Luca and Dami’s comments about Tasha during the challenge, which left her in floods of tears.

5. Good Morning Britain

Ofcom received a number of complaints in February about Good Morning Britain, when Richard Madeley spoke about death threats made to Keir Starmer. Viewers claimed that Madeley downplayed the threats, questioning if they were a “big deal”. He later addressed the comments and said: “I just want to reiterate the obvious statement that death threats clearly are never acceptable.”

6. Jeremy Vine

Jeremy Vine viewers complained about a health consultant’s comments at the beginning of the year in January 2022. A guest on the Jeremy Vine show made an inaccurate comment about the number of unvaccinated people in hospital with Covid-19.

7. The fall out from the Love Island movie night episode

Love Island complaints just never stopped as more flooded in relating to alleged misogynistic and bullying behaviour by contestants in the villa. The episode after movie night saw the fallout between the contestants, with the couples still dealing with the repercussions of Casa Amor.

8. Matt Hancock’s treatment on I’m A Celebrity

Ofcom also received several complaints about how Matt Hancock was being treated in the jungle by other campmates, with some viewers saying he was being bullied.

9. FIFA World Cup Final

The FIFA World Cup Final 2022 saw Argentina take the trophy but it wasn’t that moment that received complaints. Viewers complained when Gary Neville compared the treatment of nurses in the UK to that of migrant workers after Qatar.

10. Sky News

A Sky News broadcaster reported that the Justice for Chris Kaba march was a tribute walk for the death of Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022. Ofcom was flooded with complaints and is currently investigating whether this breached rules on due accuracy.
