Exclusive: We spoke to the student who created the Binley Mega Chippy song

The Binley Mega Chippy song is all anyone is talking about right now. But the tune’s humble origins have been shrouded in mystery. UNTIL NOW.

A few videos have been circulating on TikTok over the past month or so, with the viral trend really taking off over the weekend. The catchy audio that often accompanies these videos can be traced back to @binleymegachippyfan53. That account is basically the epicentre of the Binley Mega Chippy trend and is responsible for so much of the content we’ve grown to know and love. In an exclusive interview, The Tab spoke to the person behind the account to find out more about the audio and the origins of the trend itself.

Who created the trend?

The original Binley Mega Chippy song was created by 20-year-old student Alex. That’s all you’re getting in terms of his identity, as although Alex is astonished by the overnight fame of his TikToks, he’s keen to stay out of the limelight.

“It’s quite overwhelming, the popularity of it,” Alex told The Tab.

How did he come up with the Binley Mega Chippy song?

“I saw a TikTok of someone going past the chip shop,” Alex said. “I thought it was funny. It didn’t really have many views at the time. I just made a few videos on it to show my friends, thinking it was a bit of a laugh really.”

He then made the iconic tune using TikTok’s “text-to-speech” function, which does what it says on the tin really.  Once he’d got the lyrics down, he added the “tenor singing voice” and thus the song was born.

“I just uploaded a video of that and it blew up,” Alex told The Tab.

When he started making Binley Mega Chippy TikToks last month, Alex only had around 100 random followers. Now he’s got over nine thousand, while the original video has one million views. On top of that, there are over 5,000 TikToks of other people using the sound.

Has Alex even been to Binley?

No. He hasn’t. Alex lives nowhere near Binley but he does harbour dreams of going to the iconic chip shop one day. He said: “I would like to go there. It would be a fun experience, I think.”

What does he think of his newfound fame?

“It’s absolutely unreal, to be honest,” Alex said. “Seeing the pages worth of news articles writing about it. It doesn’t make any sense really.”
