Depp v Heard: Just a round-up of all the pettiness that went on in court yesterday

Accusations were flying

With just one day to go until the Depp v. Heard trial’s end, things aren’t exactly winding down peacefully.

It’s unsure how long the jury will take to deliberate after the lawyers give their final statements tomorrow (27th May). It could be hours, days or even weeks before a verdict is decided. To recap, Johnny Depp is suing ex-wife Amber Heard for defamation, after she called herself a “public figure representing domestic abuse” in an op-ed. The actress is countersuing him for £81 million in damages.

Yesterday was arguably the biggest day in court since Heard began her testimony – complete with petty arguments, a second Depp statement and a testimony from Kate Moss herself. Let’s revisit some of the fieriest moments:

A TMZ employee accused Heard’s lawyer of ’15 minutes of fame’

Morgan Tremaine – a former employee of TMZ – was called to the stand to discuss how a private video of Depp taking his anger out on kitchen cabinets fell into the hands of the publication. TMZ had filed an emergency motion to block Tremaine as a witness, but this was rejected by the Judge.

During his cross-examination by Elaine Bredehoft, a member of Heard’s legal team, the lawyer accused him of having “his 15 minutes of fame.” Despite Depp’s legal team objecting to the “argumentative” question, Judge Azcarate overruled this.

In response, Tremaine said: “I’m actually putting myself in the line of target of TMZ, a very litigious organisation, and I’m not seeking any 15 minutes here, though you’re welcome to speculate. I could say the same thing about taking Amber Heard as a client, for you.”

Bredehoft replied, “a little argumentative, don’t you think?” as Depp’s legal team struggled to hide their laughter.

“Oh, hardly, I find that to be purely logical,” Tremaine said.

On 13th August 2016, TMZ uploaded a video to YouTube titled, “Johnny Depp Goes Off on Amber Heard… Hurls Wine Glass.”

The footage shows Depp kicking kitchen cabinets, while yelling “motherfucker” repeatedly. Heard says to him, “nothing happened this morning, you know that?” as he slams the cupboard doors.

“Nothing happened to you this morning,” Depp replied.

“I just woke up and you were so sweet and nice,” Heard said, while secretly recording. “We weren’t even fighting this morning.”

Pouring a glass of wine, Depp says: “You wanna see crazy? I’ll give you fucking crazy.” He then spots the camera filming and takes it away.

Who is Morgan Tremaine?

Tremaine was employed by TMZ at the time the video was leaked – but he now works for an Esports company. He lead TMZ’s video content between October 2015 and August 2017 as an Assignment Manager.
