Wait, so it turns out the lighting and colours in Heartstopper have a deeper meaning
This show is so beautiful
The colours and lighting in Heartstopper are truly what makes the show so beautiful. Obviously the plot is really special but the real fans know the colours and lighting in Heartstopper also have deeper meanings behind them. So here’s a rundown of all the subtle times the colours in Heartstopper had a deeper meaning when they popped up in a scene.
1. The rainbow lighting when Nick and Charlie meet
This rainbow lens flare is so subtle but so perfect at the same time. There’s also another one later on after Charlie runs out in the rain to kiss Nick – goosebumps.
2. The periodic table is giving gay
I might be clutching here but this period table behind Tara and Darcy is screaming: gay.
3. All of the blue and yellow resembles Charlie and Nick
Now I know this, I am screaming. When I first watched Heartstopper I couldn’t work out why the hell everything was blue and yellow but now I know they resemble Nick and Charlie I’m even more obsessed.
4. Tao has LGBTQ+ lighting in his bedroom
Tao really said ally!
5. Tara and Darcy are in a room full of things in the lesbian flag colours
It’s so subtle but you can’t not see it! The shades of pink, orange and white – J’adore.
6. The cartoon sparks flying when Nick goes to hold Charlie’s hand
Right when Nick begins to question his unfamiliar feelings, this happens and it’s so nice. The gays were screaming at this point.
7. The lesbian lighting on Tara in this scene was so strong
What makes this lighting quite jokes is that everyone thinks there’s something happening between Nick and Tara at this point. But in reality, Tara is in a incredible lesbian relationship and Nick is questioning his own bisexuality – a win for the gays.
8. As Nick watches Tara and Darcy kiss the bisexual flag lights up his face
When they’re all at Harry’s party, Tara and Darcy kiss. Nick watches them in the crowd and blue, purple and pink lighting flashes across his face representing the bisexual flag.
9. Tara and Darcy are lit up in the LGBTQ+ flag when they kiss
I am screaming, crying, shaking and throwing up.
10. There’s a rainbow orb when Nick and Charlie kiss for the first time
Just look right above them in the curtains – there’s a little rainbow orb!
11. There’s a blue and green orb when they kiss again
The colours in the gay man flag are different shades of green and blue with white in the middle. You may have missed it but when Nick goes over to Charlie’s house after the party and they kiss, a small green and blue orb appears.
12. There’s bisexual lighting in the medical room after the rugby match
This was not subtle whatsoever, I know that. But I can’t not include it. Everything about it is perfect from the floating cartoon leaves to how Charlie and Nick are right in the centre.
13. The entire bowling ally is a bisexual experience
Right so moving on to Charlie’s birthday – the bowling ally is lit in clear bisexual colours but there might have been some smaller bits you missed out on. For example the rainbow shooters inside the Maxx X Grab machines.
14. The blender is the same colour as the trans flag
When everyone goes on a triple date in episode six, the blender used to make the milkshake is in the transgender flag colours!
15. The cinema was also strictly lit up in the bisexual flag
Um so the cinema and bowling alley in Heartstopper are possibly the prettiest filming locations ever!
16. The rainbow umbrella makes a feature throughout
This wasn’t the first time we have seen the umberella but it deserves a mention for adding to the queer aesthetic.
17. There’s another rainbow orb on sports day
Look at them holding hands!
