My FYP on TikTok is filled with a new sound that is getting a laugh out of my cynical little heart every time I see it, and it’s the “that wasn’t real / please don’t say that, it was real” trend. This is one of them times where TikTok latches onto something completely minor and makes it absolute comedy gold and honestly, it’s trends like this that make me wonder what the hell I even did with my time before I scrolled through my TikTok laughing at nonsense.

The audio starts with a dismissive “that wasn’t real, who cares?” and is followed up with a pleading “don’t say that, please don’t say that, it was real! It was real to me!” and people are using it mostly to show affinity for viral internet pictures that we all obsessed over circa 2012 that as the years have gone by we have sadly realised were a hoax. We’re talking Poot Lovato, the Barbie movie bloopers, the pictures of Vladimir Putin riding a bear topless and the iconic, timeless, recurring laugh that is Jason Derulo falling down the stairs at the Met Gala.

Where is the sound originally from?!

Very glad you asked, because I smugly knew with no hesitation that this sound is taken from Black Widow. It’s a scene between Scarlett Johannson as Natasha Romanoff and Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, who are somewhat siblings. Florence Pugh is quite literally the greatest thing in the film industry right now as far as I’m concerned, and her getting her own funny viral TikTok sound with “that wasn’t real” in her campy Russian accent is the least she deserves.
