What exactly is the multimillion pound deal that Harry and Meghan have with Netflix?

Their first series is already in development

During Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s interview with Oprah, one topic of conversation was the couple’s multimillion pound deal with Netflix, and their bid to become “financially independent” after stepping back from royal duties.

In the interview, Harry revealed he and Meghan had been “cut off” from the family financially, so have since had to come up with other ways to earn a living. This included the couple’s deal with Netflix, as well as a podcast deal with Spotify. The Netflix deal was announced in the press in September last year, and here’s a breakdown of everything we know about it so far.

What are the details of the deal Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have with Netflix?

Harry and Meghan’s Netflix deal covers them making a whole range of content for the site, and over many years. The couple will release documentaries, feature-length films, scripted series, and even children’s programmes. The deal, which was announced last year, was reported as being worth multimillions. Whilst the exact figure has not been disclosed, The New York Times reports it as being worth an estimated $100 million. Meghan has reportedly said she has no plans to return to acting as part of the deal.

The New York Times also reports that one of Meghan and Harry’s first projects will be an animated series focused on inspiring women, which is already in development.

In the interview with Oprah, Harry said that it was a friend who suggested the couple struck up some deals with streamers after stepping back from royal duties. Harry said: “We hadn’t thought about it. There were all sorts of different options and from my perspective, I just needed enough money to pay for security to keep my family safe.”

In the interview, Meghan added: “Life is about storytelling. For us to be able to have storytelling through a truthful lens that is hopefully uplifting is going to be great, knowing how many people that can land with and be able to give a voice to a lot of people that are underrepresented and aren’t really heard.”

The couple founded their new nonprofit organisation, Archewell, and more recently created Archewell Productions, which will produce content in collaboration with Netflix. The description on the production company website reads: “Archewell Productions was created by The Duke and Duchess of Sussex to produce programming that informs, elevates, and inspires. Through its creative partnership with Netflix—the world’s leading streaming entertainment service with more than 195 million members—Archewell Productions will utilise the power of storytelling to embrace our shared humanity and duty to truth through a compassionate lens.”

Last year when the partnership deal was announced, Meghan and Harry said in a statement: “Our lives, both independent of each other and as a couple, have allowed us to understand the power of the human spirit: of courage, resilience, and the need for connection. Through our work with diverse communities and their environments, to shining a light on people and causes around the world, our focus will be on creating content that informs but also gives hope.

“As new parents, making inspirational family programming is also important to us, as is powerful storytelling through a truthful and relatable lens.” They added that Netflix’s “unprecedented reach will help us share impactful content that unlocks action.”

Ted Sarandos, Netflix’s chief content officer and co-chief exec, added: “We’re incredibly proud they have chosen Netflix as their creative home and are excited about telling stories with them that can help build resilience and increase understanding for audiences everywhere.”
