These meeting the parents horror stories make me never want to progress in a relationship again

‘He took his clothes off, and put them in the sink’

There comes a time in a relationship when it's getting a little serious and the next step is to meet the parents. The combination of nerves and fear of losing your one true love can lead to unusual behaviour, and awkward situations.

Last night on Love Island, the remaining contestants' parents came to be reunited with their sons and daughters and to meet their new reality TV partners. It was excellent TV. As always. Although we're kinda gutted Danny Dyer only made it on Skype, not in person.

It's safe to say Dr Alex had a bit of a disaster meeting Alexandra's mum, so we decided to ask you for your horror stories when meeting your in-laws, just to see if it could get any worse. And some of you have really fucked it.

"He put his clothes in the sink and walked naked into the front room"

The first time I took my boyfriend home to meet my parents he fell asleep in the kitchen, took all his clothes off, put his clothes in the sink and walked naked into the front room. He announced, “I don’t know about you lot but I’m off to bed”, then almost walked into my sisters bedroom. Alexa, 23

"My mum had to stay up for hours with him making sure he didn't choke on his own vomit"

The first time my boyfriend ever stopped over we'd been at an 18th birthday party and my boyfriend was smashed. He threw up all over my neighbour's garden and literally fell into the hall. My mum had to stay up for hours with him making sure he didn't choke on his own vomit. She gave him a glass of water but he just smashed the glass. My mum was actually really nice about it, she kept saying how it "happens to everyone", but deep down we all know she was thinking "oh god, this must be Henry then". Holly, 21

"Rob has an Australian accent and is sometimes hard to understand"

So my step dad is called Rob and my ex is called Will. Rob is very intimidating man so Will was very scared to meet him. Rob also has an Australian accent and is sometimes hard to understand. So Rob and Will meet for the first time and Will says “hi, how are you?” and goes in for a hand shake. Rob says “hi, I’m well”. Will thinks he is saying “Hi, I’m Will”. So Will says “Hi … I’m … Rob ?” Mortifying. Maddy, 20

"How can anyone be bisexual?"

My boyfriend was in the car with my mum and me. I said my friend was bi and she was like “urgh greedy! How can anyone be bisexual?” and my boyfriend just goes “I think I’m qualified to answer that”. Kate, 22

"I was naked under the bed for an hour"

A girl who I had been dating for three years hid me under her bed because her dad came to visit and she hadn't told him about me. They both sat on her bed and had a catch up for like an hour as I was under the bed. Naked. James, 20

"I hit on my girlfriend's mother"

I was dating the editor of the rival student newspaper and I accidentally hit on her mother. In front of her mum’s boyfriend. I felt embarrassed but she found me “fascinating” apparently. The grandmother pointedly said “if he can get a job at a newspaper, why can’t you?” So yeah 5/10 on that front. James, 23

"I scurried him out but my parents totally knew"

I was moving in on my first day of Freshers’ which happened to fall on the same day of my parents wedding anniversary, so they were making a weekend of me moving in and stopping in a hotel in Bournemouth. One of the American footballers ended up staying in my room, and then at 8am I heard this knocking on my door – my flat mate had let my parents in and they were waiting to take me to Asda for a shop, but the footballer was still in my room.

I screamed through the door for them to wait in the lounge and scurried him out but my parents totally knew. My cover story was that yes there was someone else in my room, but it was Jody – our friend who was living in a big student house but nobody else had moved in with her yet and she was scared to be there on her own so she'd stopped at mine. Don’t think they believed me. Chloe, 21

"I knocked her about five steps down the stairs"

After 10 minutes of meeting my girlfriend’s mum I accidentally knocked her about five steps down the stairs. She was fine. Tom, 19

"It was pretty overwhelming and I needed to sit in the corner and be looked after a little bit"

Had already met the parents but accidentally met the home friends and family friends all at the same time when I was tripping. It was pretty overwhelming and I needed to sit in the corner and be looked after a little bit, but I got away with it. Tiredness was probably one of the key factors in me getting absolutely rekt that evening and allowing someone to clip a line down the middle of my hair. Heavy regret but it was an accident. Joe, 21

"You’ve lied to your family and I’m very disappointed in you"

The first time I brought my boyfriend home my dad texted me: “Whoever is up there with you I want them out of the house by the time I get back from walking the dog. You’ve lied to your family and I’m very disappointed in you.” Gemma, 20

"His parents walked in on us having sex"

When I first slept with my boyfriend it was basically a one night stand and his parents walked in on us having sex in the morning and said "it's really nice to meet you, Chloe". I still don’t know who Chloe was. Rebecca, 22
