Here’s the meaning of the ‘pear of anguish’ threat all over TikTok rn, and it’s horrific
Does TikTok pay for therapy? It should
Random historical references like the pear of anguish and Judas cradle have been given new life thanks to TikTok, forming what is quickly becoming a unique brand of brain rot.
Since its inception in 2016, TikTok has birthed a new language of admittedly creative nonsense. You’ve got white shampoo, a slang term for sperm, a more creative way of being homophobic with Dagestan, and who could forget the random numbers that have their own lore?
We desperately need the Oxford Dictionary to publish a TikTok version, but until then, here’s what the pear of anguish is, where it’s from, and why I now need therapy.
It’s gaining traction on TikTok because of The Potluck Court Room’s Shaiie
@shaiie_foeva
Right now, if you go to practically any FoodTok video on TikTok, you’ll find people declaring that the poster should receive punishments ranging from the Judas cradle to the pear anguish. Originally, this line of food-related threats came from @shaiie_foeva.
If you’re criminally online, you’ll no doubt know Shaiie from her Potluck Court Room videos. Essentially, she reacts to various potlucks and mukbangs whilst doling out various punishments ranging from “10 years in maximum security” to “the electric for you and your lawyer.”

After countless iterations of that format, most of which rack up millions of views, Shaiie has been forced to get more creative with the punishments, hence the rise of the pear of anguish and other medieval torture methods. Rat torture is also a particular favourite of hers, it seems.

After seeing the pear of anguish evoked all over TikTok, I did some Google searching and realised I should NEVER have entered that rabbit hole. You see, the pear of anguish is a medieval torture device with one very specific – and very traumatic – purpose.
Though disputed amongst historians, the pear of anguish was said to be a torture device first employed in the 1600s. Shaped like a pear, the device was allegedly inserted into an orifice before it was stretched outwards. As you can imagine, and without going into graphic detail, the result would have been quite bloody and brutal.
So yeah, next time you see Shaiie sentencing someone to the pear of anguish, say a silent prayer.
