I researched TikTok’s banned ‘white shampoo’ trend so you don’t have to, and it’s horrific

Can TikTok also ban it from my memory?

TikTok content creators are warning people “not to search up the white shampoo” trend, so naturally, I did exactly that and was horrified by what I found. We’re so tired, but the internet never rests.

TikTok might be home to quirky dance challenges and trash AI trends that literally burn the planet, but like all social platforms, it’s also home to what should honestly be studied at the highest levels of education. From people trying to spark life in a box of mould, to the dating for dinner trend, it seems the internet has always got something up its sleeve to horrify or confuse us.

Enter the white shampoo trend, which, as you might have guessed, has absolutely nothing to do with personal hygiene. Here I was thinking people were making funny faces out of soapy suds – boy, was I so wrong.

Right, so what actually is TikTok’s white shampoo trend?

Thanks largely to TikTok, and its rather stringent rules and regulations, there is now an entirely new language we are forced to keep up with. From “unalived” to “corn”, brain rot words are fast becoming part of everyday life – and TikTok’s white shampoo trend is no different.

There’s simply no easy way to write this, so I’m just going to say it: The white shampoo trend on TikTok is about men pleasuring themselves on camera, with the aforementioned white shampoo being their… spicy yoghurt. Their man mayo? Dude goo? Vanilla extract? You get the point, and I can’t comb through Urban Dictionary synonyms anymore.

According to some reports online, the trend was sparked by a content creator under the name @okkkkokot, who did his business in a bathroom stall. Since then, it’s caught on fire, with literally hundreds of variations popping up across the app. Sometimes, the camera is on the guy’s face as he does the deed; other times, you simply see the hand motions. In some rare cases, there’s even a flash of peen before the inevitable white shampoo.

The viral trend has certainly not been helped by the dozens of accounts posting videos like “don’t search white shampoo” and “adding this to my white shampoo collection”.

TikTok has banned it, but the shampoo trend is sticky

After weeks of white shampoo videos running rampant on its platform, TikTok essentially banned the term by preventing people from searching for it.

If you do search for white shampoo, you’ll instead be met with this message: “This phrase may be associated with behaviour or content that violates our guidelines. Promoting a safe and positive experience is TikTok’s top priority.”

However, people are still finding ways around the ban. Some have changed TikTok’s white shampoo trend into a sort of vault, collecting hot videos in their likes for people to consume in private. Others have gotten slightly more creative, using filters and AI to trick the algorithm into keeping the video up.

It doesn’t seem to be going anywhere – ironically, much like white shampoo.
