Death of the Pastor’s Wife creators weigh in on Mica Miller’s case and what actually happened

‘What stayed with us about Mica’s story was how hard she seemed to be fighting to be heard’

In Netflix’s Death of the Pastor’s Wife, Mica Miller’s family and friends claim that JP Miller had something to do with her death, but now the creators of the true crime documentary have weighed in on what they think actually happened.

Mica was found dead at Lumber River State Park in North Carolina on April 27, 2024, two days after she served JP with divorce papers. Her death was ruled a suicide.

But because of the allegations surrounding her marriage and the events before her death, loads of people have continued to ask what actually happened to Mica, and what the filmmakers believe about her death.

So, here’s what the Death of the Pastor’s Wife creators have actually said.

The series was directed by Julia Willoughby Nason and Michael Gasparro, the filmmakers behind Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal and American Murder: Gabby Petito.

The Netflix documentary was built using Mica’s journals, text messages, performance footage, police reports, medical records, JP’s sermons and text messages, as well as interviews with her friends and family.

“What stayed with us about Mica’s story was how hard she seemed to be fighting to be heard,” Nason and Gasparro told Netflix Tudum. “We felt it was important to look closely at what she was experiencing and give the people who loved her the space to tell the story of the woman they knew.”

They added, “We made this series to ask difficult questions, listen closely to Mica’s own voice, and make sure that what she was trying to say is not forgotten.”

So, what actually happened to Mica?

Mica’s death was officially ruled a suicide. She was found at Lumber River State Park after suffering a self-inflicted gunshot wound. She had served JP with divorce papers two days earlier.

At the same time, Mica’s family and friends had raised concerns about her marriage and alleged that she had experienced coercive control and other forms of abuse. Those allegations are a major part of the documentary. The series also examines the allegations that JP stalked and harassed Mica before her death.

JP has denied involvement in Mica’s death. He has also pleaded not guilty to the federal charges against him, which are separate from any allegation that he caused her death.

Michael Gasparro believes Mica took her own life

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Gasparro was asked about the circumstances of Mica’s death and whether he believed she had died by suicide.

“I believe that Mica took her life,” Gasparro said.

He then explained, “I think it’s important that we say that because I think there’s mental health stuff here, and I think if we say anything else, then it’s a disservice to this person’s life and what she went through.”

Nason also offered a message to people who might recognise elements of Mica’s experience in their own lives.

“You’re not alone,” she said. “The abuse that you’re feeling is designed to make you feel like you’re alone, and it’s an illusion. Even though you may want to get out of it and you’re scared it will get worse, you don’t know how strong you are until you’re facing it, and you can get through it.”
