Shein issues statement after Luigi Mangione’s likeness was used to model shirt on website

The company says it’s launching an investigation

Fast fashion brand Shein has released a statement addressing the likeness of Luigi Mangione being used to model a shirt on their website. Luigi Mangione currently stands accused of murdering United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson, to which he pleads not guilty – and the accusations of AI usage have been called out at Shein after images of a model with the likeness of Mangione quickly went viral. Shein has now released a statement, revealing it has launched an investigation into why the face resembling Luigi Mangione was on its website.

After initially being reported by TMZ, screenshots and videos of the model on the Shein website seemingly wearing the face of Luigi Mangione quickly went viral. The link in the TMZ story to the Shein website now shows that it’s been taken down.

A spokesperson for Shein said to the BBC: “The image in question was removed immediately upon discovery. We have stringent standards for the content of listings on our platform”, the spokesperson added. “We are conducting a thorough review and are strengthening our monitoring processes.”

In a further statement to TMZ, the Shein spokesperson said: ““The image in question was provided by a third-party vendor and was removed immediately upon discovery. We have stringent standards for all listings on our platform. We are conducting a thorough investigation, strengthening our monitoring processes, and will take appropriate action against the vendor in line with our policies.”

Luigi Mangione was arrested in December and faces charges of murder and stalking. He has plead not guilty. Prosecution are seeking the death penalty for the 26 year old when he faces trial.

Luigi Mangione’s legal battles are set to stretch well into next year, with his federal trial expected to begin in 2026. A key hearing is scheduled for December 5, 2025, when the court is likely to confirm the official start date. Meanwhile, in New York State, Mangione is due back in court on September 16, 2025, though no trial date has been set.

Shein has yet to discuss further the allegations of AI being used for its models on the website – as people continue to question how Mangione’s face could appear modelling the summer shirt whilst he’s incarcerated.
