‘There were bodies all around me. I was scared’

When Vishwash Kumar Ramesh was first interviewed, he spoke out about the crash and what he witnessed happen. He said things went wrong just 30 seconds in the flight, and he recalled “dead bodies all around”.

“30 seconds after take-off, there was a loud noise and then the plane crashed. It all happened so quickly,” Vishwash Kumar Ramesh told Hindustan Times. “When I got up, there were bodies all around me. I was scared. I stood up and ran. There were pieces of the plane all around me. Someone grabbed hold of me and put me in an ambulance and brought me to the hospital.”

He had been visiting family in India, and was heading back to London with his brother. “He was travelling with me and I can’t find him anymore. Please help me find him,” he said of his brother.

Vishwash Kumar Ramesh has explained how he escaped the crash

Vishwash Kumar Ramesh went on to explain exactly what happened at the moment of impact, and how he managed to live.

“I don’t believe how I survived,” he told Indian state broadcaster DD News from his hospital bed. “For some time I thought I was also going to die. But when I opened my eyes, I realised I was alive and I tried to unbuckle myself from the seat and escape from where I could. It was in front of my eyes that the air hostess and others [died].”

He said that in the moments before impact it felt as though the plane was stuck in mid-air. He recalled lights turning green and white inside the cabin, and feeling a powerful engine thrust. “The pilot was trying to give it a bit of a push to push it forward, but it was struggling. But it went straight into a building,” he said.

Mr Ramesh then explained he “pulled out the belt from under my seat and tried to escape. Then I managed to do it.”

He added: “The side of the plane I was in landed on the ground. I could see that there was space outside the aircraft, so when my door broke I tried to escape through it and I did. The opposite side of the aircraft was blocked by the building wall, so nobody could have come out of there.”

Investigations continue into what may have caused the plane to come down.
