‘I don’t believe how I survived’
The sole survivor of the devastating Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad has now revealed how he managed to escape from the wreckage that killed more than 240 people.
The 40-year-old British national of Indian origin, Ramesh Viswashkumar, sat in seat 11A near an emergency exit. According to police, that location may have saved his life. After the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed into a medical college hostel on Thursday, Viswashkumar said he found himself conscious and managed to crawl out through a broken emergency hatch.
“I don’t believe how I survived,” he told Indian state broadcaster DD News from his hospital bed. “For some time I thought I was also going to die. But when I opened my eyes, I realised I was alive and I tried to unbuckle myself from the seat and escape from where I could. It was in front of my eyes that the air hostess and others (died).”
He described the moments before the crash, saying the plane seemed to stall in mid-air seconds after take-off, just before crashing with force into the hostel building. He recalled the lights turning green and white inside the cabin, and feeling a powerful engine thrust. Then came impact.

Social media videos showed Viswashkumar limping away from the crash site, covered in blood with visible facial injuries. There have been questions about the legitimacy of that clip, especially when it first surfaced. He reportedly walked out with burns to his left arm but no life-threatening wounds. Doctors confirmed he did not suffer any major internal injuries.

“The side of the plane I was in landed on the ground,” he explained. “I could see that there was space outside the aircraft, so when my door broke I tried to escape through it and I did. The opposite side of the aircraft was blocked by the building wall, so nobody could have come out of there.”
Police confirmed that people inside the hostel and on the ground were also among the dead. Rescue teams continued searching the charred remains of the building today, June 13.
Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi visited the crash site in his home state of Gujarat. He also met Viswashkumar at the hospital.
