Photos of Pope Francis’ bedroom reveal just how simply he chose to live

‘No pretence, no gold chandeliers’

Pope Francis wasn’t just the head of the Catholic Church, he was a man who rewrote the rulebook on what it means to lead with compassion and humility. And now, in the days following his passing, Pope Francis’ bedroom is giving the world an intimate glimpse into just how true to his values he really was.

From the moment he stepped into the role in 2013, Jorge Mario Bergoglio made it clear: This papacy would be different. And it was.

Although entitled to a staggering $32,000 a month in papal salary, totalling millions over his 12-year tenure, Pope Francis never took a penny. Not once. Instead, he quietly lived out the vows he made as a Jesuit: Poverty, chastity, and obedience. No limousines, no designer robes, no private palaces.

So, what did he choose instead?

A modest life, tucked away in Domus Sanctae Marthae, a simple guesthouse inside the Vatican. Far from the opulence of the Apostolic Palace, this was home for him.

And now, after his passing on Easter Monday (21 April), the world is finally getting a glimpse of how he lived.

His bedroom, now seen in photos circulating online, is a quiet testament to his values. A single wooden bed, plain furnishings, a few crucifixes on the wall. Not much else. No velvet, no gold, no grandeur.

It shocked some, one person even joked it looked like a set from The Exorcist. But for most, it was deeply moving. “This is what a servant leader’s quarters look like,” one admirer wrote on Twitter. “No pretence, no gold chandeliers, no ostentatious displays, no personal accolades, just simple dignity.”

Francis was known for breaking tradition. He welcomed LGBTQ+ people, pushed for diversity in the Church, and wasn’t afraid to take a stand on climate change and injustice. But perhaps his most powerful message was this: True greatness lies in simplicity.

Even in death, he broke from Vatican tradition, choosing not to be buried in the usual tombs. Because for Pope Francis, titles and thrones never mattered. People did. And his humble little bedroom now speaks louder than any sermon ever could.
