The pope died of a cerebral stroke on 21st April
The Vatican have revealed what Pope Francis’s last words were before his death.
The pope died from a cerebral stroke in the morning of Monday 21st April. Some of Pope Francis’s last words were to the nurse who looked after him throughout his many illnesses.
Pope Francis’s last public appearance was when he addressed a crowd of 20,000 people in St Peter’s Square. An archbishop then read out a speech about Easter which Pope Francis had written.

The nurse Massimiliano Strappetti looked after Pope Francis during his colon surgery, and became his personal healthcare assistant in 2022. Strapetti planned out the route from Pope Francis’s rooms to St. Peter’s Basilica to check he was able to travel there. Pope Francis only met with the crowds on Easter Sunday after consulting Strapetti about this. He asked, “Do you think I can manage it?”
After the event, Pope Francis thanked Strapetti for supporting him. He said: “Thank you for bringing me back to the Square.”
Pope Francis went back to his apartments in the Casa Santa Marta. He made a gesture of farewell to Strapetti. Not long afterwards, he fell into a coma. He died early in the morning.
Pope Francis recently spent 28 days in the Gemelli Hopsital in Rome, while he was treated for bronchitis and pneumonia. Massimiliano Strappetti stayed by Pope Francis’s time during this time.
