People spotted this parallel between Black Mirror’s USS Callister and the sequel and it’s wild

The show is so clever for this

USS Callister is one of the best episodes of Black Mirror ever, so if you’re as big of a fan of the show as I am you were probably equally as thrilled to know that the sequel, Into Infinity, was finally coming in season seven. Netflix chose to finish off the season with the USS Callister sequel, with Into Infinity clocking in a feature length runtime and being just as worthy of acclaim as the first one. Fans have clocked this amazing detail in the USS Callister sequel though – with a wild parallel between the original and Into Infinity that Black Mirror have done and it’s all to do with their opening sequences.

It’s all to do with Robert Daly and Nanette Cole

Fans of Black Mirror on Reddit clocked the parallel between the original Black Mirror episode USS Callister and the sequel Into Infinity in the opening sequences. Both episodes start with the same establishing sequence, but focusing on different characters.

Both Robert in the original and Nanette in the sequel start the days like this:

• The two of them both start their day in the same packed lift, and have to barge their way out.

• Both Robert and Nanette’s keycards don’t work –  so the two of them have the same interaction with receptionist.

• They both trip and fall and get laughed at by the same colleague.

Obviously, the main difference here is that Robert Daly is the overarching antagonist of both of these stories, and Nanette was the victim who we saw the journey through the eyes of way back when. It’s unclear why Black Mirror chose to parallel the two of them, because at first it made fans (me included) feel so nervous that Nanette had gone bad and was also living a dictator life in the virtual world.

Thankfully, that wasn’t the case and she was still a good person. Maybe it was just a red herring to throw us off? Classic Charlie Brooker behaviour, to be fair.

Black Mirror season seven is available on Netflix now. For all the latest Netflix news, drops and memes like The Holy Church of Netflix on Facebook.
