10 University of Birmingham societies you should try out this semester

What do you mean there’s a society where you can debate on which tea is the best?

University campuses are often bustling with well-known clubs and organisations, but hidden among them are unique societies that thrive in the shadows. These groups often cater to niche interests, providing an alternative space for students to explore their passions.

This article highlights some of the most intriguing little-known societies, celebrating the diversity they bring to campus life.

Tea Society

Exactly as you’d think. Every Friday afternoon students gather at the Guild to chat over steaming cups of tea, and if you arrive early enough there will also be biscuits.

It’s a very low-key, low-commitment group that allows students of different disciplines to socialise together in the most British way possible. They take the tea alarm very seriously around there!

Modern Languages

All students, monolingual or polyglot, or somewhere in between, with a passion for languages are welcome to join their events!

You don’t need to undertake a modern languages degree to appreciate their film screenings, quiz nights, pub crawls…but wouldn’t it be nice to know how these things are named outside of English?

And, with the additional modern foreign languages ball justifying buying a new glitzy gown and spending £14 on a single gin and tonic, whats not to like?

Writers’ Bloc

The resident creative writing society, though they do dabble in non-fiction, essays, and articles, if that’s more your cup of tea.

Weekly writing sessions are held in the arts building on Wednesday evenings, where participants enjoy the night-time view of the campus that often serves as inspiration.

Once a month, they also host an open mic night at Circo for any aspiring performance poets.

Hide and Seek

This society was quite difficult to track down, as befitting their usual past-time of recreating their childhood’s games around campus.

However, despite the name, this isn’t all they do. In the past they have collaborated with various university societies and charities, and even organised a fundraiser for children with cancer. Through such efforts, the society has demonstrated that their activities, while rooted in fun and nostalgia, also carry a deeper purpose, reflecting their dedication to making a positive impact in their community. And for those that care about such things: One notable prize once given out to winners included a free pint at the pub.

Baking

Picture a cozy kitchen filled with the smells of freshly baked cookies and cakes, where students gather to whip up sweet treats after their various academic obligations.

This society meets twice a month at the Multi-Faith Chaplaincy, facilitating the development of meaningful connections among its members, enhanced by the exchange of recipes and culinary techniques. A perfectly charming way to end a day, even with all the inevitable clean-up at the end.

Knowing my cooking skills though, its probably better for the safety of everyone for me not to attend…

Cheese

Members gather regularly to explore a diverse range of cheeses from around the world, participate in tastings, and learn about the history of cheese-making.

This society is more than Aldi’s £2.99 cheese, it also has weird colours in it for fun!

The society hosts themed events, aiming to foster a deeper appreciation for this beloved dairy product. All the members will receive 10 per cent off at UoB markets for the Queso and Curds and Whey stalls.

13th Horror

With a mission to celebrate horror across various mediums – including film, video games, literature, and live performances – this society offers members opportunities to engage deeply with their passions. In addition to its focus on personal development, the group hosts casual gatherings, such as open film screenings and horror trivia nights.

Upcoming activities include Q&A sessions with upcoming horror filmmakers, table reads of original scripts, and a dedicated horror book club.

Sober Socials

This society emphasises the significance of connection, camaraderie, and enjoyment without the influence of alcohol or drugs. This may be a good idea if you need to touch some grass and lay off the VKs at the Guild.

Members organise a diverse range of social activities, including game nights, movie screenings, outdoor adventures, and workshops, all designed to promote interaction in a safe, sober environment. They also have a very active Discord server where all updates are posted!

Plant Society

Dedicated to fostering a love for plants and the environment, this society brings together students of all backgrounds who share an interest in botany, gardening, and sustainability.

Members participate in a variety of activities all aimed at enhancing their understanding of plant care and ecological responsibility. They have organised pub crawls, coffee mornings, re-potting and educational sessions, and so much more. And if you follow their Instagram, you can add some cute plant facts to your feed.

Open Mic

Open Mic Soc is an engaging community that provides students with a platform to express their creativity through performance and spoken word.

Here, members focus on fostering a supportive environment where individuals can share their talents, including music, poetry, storytelling, and various forms of artistic expression. Central to the society’s mission is the creation of a welcoming space that promotes confidence and self-expression, allowing students to explore their artistic abilities and receive constructive feedback from peers.
