Owen Cooper explains why the Adolescence hot chocolate wasn’t actually hot chocolate

‘It was disgusting – it was horrible’

It’s hard to talk about Adolescence on Netflix without reflecting on the absolute masterpiece that was episode three. The show has been a huge hit for Netflix, in which Stephen Graham and Jack Thorne have penned a harrowing story of a family rocked when their 13 year old son is arrested for the murder of a female schoolmate. Linking up with Philip Barantini of Boiling Point excellence, the four one shot take episodes of Adolescence have had the culture in a chokehold since they dropped on Netflix a few weeks back. The third episode, which is mostly a two hander between Owen Cooper as Jamie and Erin Doherty as psychologist Briony, has tension through the roof that starts with a hot chocolate – but now Owen’s explained how that Adolescence beverage in the Netflix show wasn’t actually as it seems.

And whilst there’ve been debates on whether he preferred marshmallows or sprinkles, Owen Cooper now revealed that the hot chocolate in Adolescence on Netflix was actually “disgusting” to drink for this specific reason.

‘It was minging’

Speaking in a behind the scenes clip where Owen Cooper and Erin Doherty dive into episode three, the situation of the hot chocolate getting launched across the room in Adolescence proved more complicated for the Netflix production crew than you might think a silly little hot bev could be.

“That was minging that,” Owen Cooper said. “Yeah, it was horrible. It wasn’t hot chocolate because it had to get changed. It was making the floors sticky for the cameramen.”

Erin Doherty says “Oh yeah, I remember in one of them [takes] it spilt all over the table. I could see people in the cameras that could see into the room quickly trying to clean it up so that by the time we came back in -”

“Aw, it was disgusting,” Owen replied.

Whilst the pair never explained what production refilled the cup with, I suppose it’s just an interesting explanation of the magic of telly and acting because Cooper had to pretend whatever was in that godforsaken cup was his favourite. Wild.
