Cardiff University’s up and coming student band, The Cheeky Habibis, release newest single
The song evokes the apprehension that comes with change, an inevitable part of being human
One of Cardiff University’s up and coming student bands have their newest single, Being Human.
The latest gift born from Cardiff’s vibrant music scene is The Cheeky Habibis.
The three piece band is made up of Cardiff University students who invite lovers (and non-lovers) of post-punk indie to listen to their newly released single Being Human on the 26th February 2025.
The band takes inspiration from the likes of Honeyglaze as well as Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds with lyrics that are honest and littered with self-deprecating humour. Their catchy and danceable music has been compared to Joy Division and Television with an updated, broader and dreamier sound.
Being Human, mixed by Cardiff producer Billy Tucker, tells a story of change, inspired by vocalist and guitarist Gabriel Lester’s move from London to Cardiff.
Opening with their distinctive use of dissonant, trebly guitar and a fast tempo, the song culminates with a rich and powerful violin. When working with violin player William Dadswell, he described the track as “a very catchy number with an intricate message behind it”.
The song evokes the apprehension that comes with change, an inevitable part of being human. It’s a bitter-sweet rendition of remembering the past in the face of an uncertain future, though this doesn’t make the track any less danceable.
The Cheeky Habibis were formed in 2022 after the bandmates chance meeting in Pryzm.
They have since played at staple music venues throughout Cardiff such as Clwb Ifor Bach, Porters and The Moon, as well as shows in London, Bristol and Swansea. They recently played at Sŵn Festival, Cardiff’s famous multi-venue indie music festival.

Their much-loved drummer, Hadi Cheri, is currently doing a year abroad in South America and unfortunately his arms are not long enough to reach his kit from across the pond. However, this by no means poses as a threat to their growing success as they are accompanied by their stand-in drummer, Zach Mills (also a member of Cardiff band The Meritones).
Their newest song Being Human follows the release of their last single “Far Away so Close” which can be found on all streaming platforms or, even better, at their next gig.
