20-year-old man jailed after footage shows machete attack during Manchester e-bike robbery

New CCTV reveals the moment a group of masked thieves chased down a man on an electric bike, before one of them attacked him with a machete. One perpetrator involved has since been identified and sentenced.

The footage, released by Greater Manchester Police (GMP), captures three balaclava-wearing men following the victim through Leigh on 17th April 2025.

The man, who was wearing an orange coat, appears to realise he is being followed as the group attempts to steal the Surron electric bike he is riding.

He makes a desperate attempt to get away, riding towards his home on Melrose Avenue. But as he reaches the property, he appears to lose control and crashes into a wall. One of the offenders can then be heard shouting “grab him now” as the victim tries to get away.

He is punched to the ground before another member of the group produces a machete and attacks him. The victim can be heard shouting “no” as he attempts to hold onto his bike.

He was left with serious injuries, including a severe cut to his thumb and wounds to his face, while the offenders escaped with the electric bike.

GMP launched an investigation into the robbery and eventually identified one of the offenders as 20-year-old Kade Cox. Cox was subsequently linked to three further incidents involving the theft or attempted theft of motorbikes and electric bikes between April and July last year.

On 4th June, three offenders targeted a shed in Leigh and stole two motorbikes worth thousands of pounds.

A month later, on 19th July, a garage in Tyldesley was broken into and three bikes were taken, including a Honda motorbike and an electric bike.

Officers used CCTV, telecommunications enquiries, social media searches and mobile phone evidence to connect Cox to the offences.

Cox, of Walker Road in Salford, was arrested and charged with robbery, burglary with intent to steal and two further burglary offences involving stolen bikes. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 10 years in prison at Bolton Crown Court on Monday 17th August.

Because of the seriousness of the April attack, the court determined that Cox must serve at least seven and a half years in custody before he can be released.

PC Richard Kelsall, senior investigating officer of Wigan’s neighbourhood team, described the incident as a “horrific attack” which left the victim with significant injuries.

“Kade Cox alongside two others looked to incite fear and violence through any means possible just so they could steal an electric bike.”

He added: “I would particularly like to note the courage of the victim who has bravely supported this investigation and continued to do so throughout sentencing.

“We hope this sentence demonstrates our determination to pursue offenders who target our communities and commit violent offences for their own personal gain.”
