University of Nottingham sends degrees to wrong addresses following ‘administrative error’

The University of Nottingham has apologised after sending a proportion of degree certificates to the incorrect mailing addresses.

Following a cyber attack and a marking boycott, the University of Nottingham decided to post graduates their certificates, instead of them being handed over during graduation ceremonies. 

However, despite one student claiming they were assured degrees would not be sent to old addresses, some certificates were still sent to the incorrect place. 

Ria Gill is one of the unknown number of students whose degree was supposed to be unceremoniously sent to her, but instead it went to a different address.

Ria told the Nottingham Post that the university had previously told students that their old addresses would not be used, and argued the mistake opened students up to potential safeguarding issues.

She added that some students degrees could have been sent to new tenants in student flats or to estranged families and ex-partners: “It’s very scary actually, anyone could have my degree.”

As well as a posted degree, Ria also received predicted grades from some modules in her final semester due to industrial action. She said: “It’s just a crazy chain reaction.”

Despite marking boycotts being one of the reasons why degrees were posted, the graduate said she supported the striking lectures, whose actions came after plans to cut more than 600 jobs. 

“Three years ago I though the University of Nottingham was so impressive, it’s a Russell Group [university], you’ve heard all these amazing things and very high rankings,” the former student said.

She even claimed: “A lot of people in my year were saying ‘its good we’re leaving while it is falling apart.'”

Ria has made a formal complaint to the university.

The University of Nottingham has not disclosed how many students have been impacted, but it has apologised for the error and said it would investigate how it happened.
