University of Nottingham’s Jewish society join Leeds for charity sporting event
The clubs held multiple matches to raise money for children with cancer
University of Nottingham and Leeds University’s Jewish Societies (JSocs) joined forced to hold a charity event in aide of children with cancer.
The charity, the “Doing It for Daniel Foundation”, provides financial assistance for children and young people with cancer. It was set up in 2021 after Daniel Caplan passed away at 17 years old due to a brain tumour.
The event raised over £3000 with four teams competing over the day. Leeds and Nottingham JSocs took part in a netball game as well as Leeds’ Haoel Hyde Park and Nottingham’s Lenton Orient competing in a football match later in the afternoon.
Despite it being the first match for the teams, some players felt they bonded well and like they had been playing together for years.
The groups came together through the Year of Student Sport (YOSS). This is a project set up in 2022 to support Jewish students at universities with access to sports teams. It is accessible to Jewish students from both Nottingham universities.
With external funding students feel they can play sport, worry free, with their peers. With one player, Alfie Keene, saying: “Without the funding, many Jewish students may find it hard to find their feet in the city, but with the football team, students instantly feel connected.”
Despite Nottingham losing its netball match to Leeds in a 40-31 defeat, the team were grateful to the YOSS for providing the opportunity to play sport with friends.
Talking to The Jewish Chronicle, a sports representative in Leeds’ JSoc discussed the positive impact this has had on the students with the JSoc netball team being newly established.
