15 things I wish I’d packed as a Fresher moving to Liverpool
Whether you’re moving to Crown, Melville or Greenbank, it’s impossible to survive without these
Moving to Liverpool for uni is elite, but packing for halls can be an absolute minefield. Many Liverpool halls include kettles, toasters, and ironing boards; checking in advance can save you a ridiculous amount of money.
These 15 items are guaranteed to save you time, money, and dignity during your first weeks.
1. Extension cable
Hall plug sockets are notoriously nowhere near your bed or desk. An extension lead with multiple slots is an absolute lifesaver for charging your phone, laptop, and fairy lights all at once.
2. Door stop
During move-in week and flat socialising, keeping your bedroom door propped open is the #1 way to make friends and look welcoming. Don’t be the hermit stuck behind a closed door!
3. Mirror

Bathroom mirrors in halls are communal or poorly lit. Having a decent mirror in your bedroom with good lighting is crucial for getting ready before heading out to Electrik or Heebies.
4. Bedroom bin
Don’t rely solely on the tiny kitchen bin or walking down the corridor in your pyjamas late at night. Having a small bin in your room keeps things hygienic and stops wrappers piling up on your desk.
5. Clothes horse
Uni laundry dryers are expensive and have a nasty habit of shrinking your favourite clothes or leaving them damp. A portable airer saves money and protects your wardrobe.
6. Freeprints
Download this before you leave. You get free photo prints every month. Perfect for sticking up pics of your mates, family, and pets from home to make your room feel cosy instantly. Just make sure to put these up with command strips rather than blue tac to get your deposit back!
7. Portable charger
When you’re out all day for campus tours, society sign-ups, and long nights at Baa Bar or Level, your phone battery will die. A pocket-sized power bank is non-negotiable.
8. First-aid kit
You never know what’s going to happen in Freshers’ Week. Pack paracetamol, rehydration sachets (Lucozade alone won’t cut it), plasters, and cold flu relief before the fresher’s flu hits hard.
9. Games

Cards, drinking games, or icebreaker games are the ultimate social currency in Freshers’ week. Whip these out in the communal kitchen and you’ll instantly have a flat full of new best friends.
10. Kitchen utensils
Flatmates love to borrow (and magically misplace) cutlery. Buy double what you think you need, or you’ll find yourself eating pasta with a teaspoon by week two.
11. Tupperware
Essential for meal prepping, storing leftovers, and bringing snacks to the library during exam season. Don’t leave home without a solid stack of reusable plastic containers.
12. Clothes hangers
Wardrobes in halls always look spacious until you actually unpack. Bring way more hangers than you think you need; wire or stackable ones save maximum space.
13. Personal items

Homesickness hits everyone, even the coolest freshers. Bring a childhood teddy, a fluffy rug, or comforting room decor to transform sterile halls into a genuinely homely sanctuary.
14. Storage boxes
Under-bed storage boxes are a student holy grail. They hide away seasonal clothes, extra bedding, and clutter, keeping your tiny room looking neat and tidy.
15. Fancy dress

Liverpool student nightlife loves a themed social. Whether it’s socials, Otley Run style crawls, or AU night parties, having a box of random fancy dress gear ready will save you last-minute panic.
