
Record medal collection at BUCS for multiple Nottingham University teams
The event hosted multiple sports including athletics, fencing, karate, swimming, badminton and climbing
The University of Nottingham pulled in a record amount of medals at a three day event in Sheffield for the 2024/25 British Universities and Colleges Sports championships (BUCS).
Overall the university claimed 17 national championships across six different sports.
Nationals, is the BUCS event of the year. The three day competition hosted 4,300 students with the University of Nottingham sending 120 athletes to compete.
Across the event, the teams secured 11 gold medals.
Deng Yaping secured two gold medals in the badminton competition.
Additionally this year’s BUCS saw the return of the para-badminton event, which left the university’s team topping three categories.
Rob Donald and Finn Goode beat University of Bristol in the men’s doubles final and Zhou Meng and Yiyi Tao also claimed the title in the women’s doubles.
Zhou Meng also cinched the win of the women’s para-badminton finals.
Across the athletics portion of the weekend, there was another gold medal claimed with the university’s “track star” Daniel Goriola winning the 60m indoor hurdles for the second time.
The Karate team held onto its title for the fifth season in a row. As well as the Karate sports scholar, James Harrison, taking his fourth individual BUCS title.
His teammate Jessica Maitland claiming top spot on the podium for the second time.
Finally, the university finished on top in the fencing park of the competition. According to the uni, it claimed the most medals for fencing with Florin Mirica and Rachael Lever claiming the men and women’s titles.
According to Rachael, the feeling of winning her second title was “absolutely amazing” saying that the community from Nottingham was key in her celebrating the win.

The university prides itself on being the top UK university for team sport as well as claiming second place in BUCS overall last year.
The haul of medals from this event will be key to it maintaining this place or even bettering itself this year.
