The men’s uni team took third place overall after some hard matches fought

University of Nottingham Boxing’s Club managed to fight their way through the 2025 BUCS (British University and Colleges Sports) with the mens team securing third place overall.

The event was held from January 24th to 26th at the University of Portsmouth Sports Centre. The team was made up of five people and four of them managed to secure a medal.

The University of Nottingham Boxing Club’s president, Rio Chung was sadly knocked out in the men’s under 63.5kgs quarter finals and didn’t secure a medal.

However, the rest of the team walked away with two gold and two bronze medals after hard fought rounds.

Emmanuel Antwi Appiah, the team captain, claimed gold in the under 75kg intermediate category and according to Uni of Notts, he displayed exceptional skill with a tactical knock out (not safe to continue fighting) in the semis and clear victory in the final.

Alongside Emmanuel, Athieren Kukendren competed in the men’s 63.5kg novices category and cinched the gold as well after an intense journey to the finals.

One of the university’s more experienced boxers, Zak White Sey, managed to secure a bronze medal in the men’s 60kg for experienced boxers after sadly losing a close call against Odhran Clancy, an Irish National Champion.

The final medal of the weekend comes from the women’s 63kg novice category. Melina Hashemi Nabi claimed a bronze medal after showing off her impressive boxing skills.

The hard work of the athletes meant that UoN managed to finish in third place overall in the men’s category. Since their success, the team have been congratulated by the uni as they have “solidified the University of Nottingham’s reputation in university boxing”.
