Meet Dr Sarah Jukaku, the even cooler wife of the politician everyone loves: Abdul El-Sayed

Sorry Zohran Mamdani, you’ve been replaced by a new hot politician

Abdul El-Sayed is the latest American politician to go so viral that people in the UK are locked in, and his wife might be even cooler.

The first (and arguably best) example of this phenomenon is noneother than Zohran Mamdani. When he was running to be New York City’s mayor, he became so popular that people who weren’t even eligible to vote in NYC were gripped by the saga. Then his wife emerged, and people were even more obsessed.

Much like Zohran, Abdul El-Sayed has been slammed as a “socialist”, “communist”, and “left-wing terrorist” by the US’ right-wing press – which is how you know he’s cool af. His proposed policies include accessible education, Medicare for everyone, Supreme Court reform, and taxing billionaires.

Abdul El-Sayed won the Democratic primary in a major landslide this month, so now it’s on to the general election in November against Republican nominee Mike Rogers. By the end of the year, he could be sitting on the United States Senate for the State of Michigan.

As the title might suggest, Abdul El-Sayed’s wife, Dr Sarah Jukaku, is a doctor who graduated from the University of Michigan with a BA in Sociology and Near Eastern Studies. But her education did not stop there, for she completed a master’s in Comparative Social Policy at the University of Oxford, and her MD from Columbia University. Sarah later completed a medical internship at Weill Cornell and a residency at Michigan Medicine.

Long story short: She’s educated af.

She grew up in Michigan after her parents emigrated from a small village in India, and spent a lot of time at various events hosted by Michigan’s Muslim Students’ Association because she hailed from a suburb without an established Muslim community.

They’re college sweethearts

Sarah and Abdul met when they were both studying at the University of Michigan, and they were engaged by the end of Sarah’s freshman year, she told the campus’ student publication The Michigan Daily.

At the time, Abdul said that they’re willingess to commit so quickly to marriage was a “byproduct” of their Muslim upbringings.

“I was going to meet one girl and I was going to marry her,” he shared. “In some senses, I feel like that’s the purest form of a relationship with someone. It cuts out all the B.S.”

She’s a practising psychologist now

Dr Sarah Jukaku has been a practising psychiatrist for over a decade, and she opened her own private practice called Mind Work in 2024. Her practice doesn’t currently accept Medicare, but that would change if her husband takes office.

Rather than a specialised area, Mind Work covers everything from OCD to depression, psychosis to maternal mental health. She does have a particular interest in young adults, according to a podcast appearance where she discussed individualising treatments for patients.

She’s got a property portfolio

Outside of being a doctor, Abdul El-Sayed’s wife also has a few properties abroad. One, in Bengaluru, India, is worth $250,000, and there’s another in Dubai.

Her work during COVID was impressive

Dr Sarah Jukaku has dedicated a lot of time to the mental health fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic, and she even operated an AMA on a podcast to answer questions about mental health in 2020.

Do they have kids?

Yes, they do! Abdul El-Sayed and Sarah Jukaku have two daughters, Emmalee and Serene.

Though innate hotness is partly why the likes of Abdul and Zohran have gone viral, I also think people just love how relatable they are. Like Zohran, Abdul frequently gasses up his wife in interviews.

“I struggled to learn who I was,” he said whilst at University. “Sarah did not. She danced with her emotions. I wrestled with mine. And in time she would teach me to dance, awkwardly, with mine too.”

For Mother’s Day, he described his wife as his “rock and the greatest mother to our daughters”, saying they’re “so blessed to have you”.

Fingers crossed this left-wing “socialist” that MAGA hates will be in the Senate before 2026 is out.
