A disturbing new allegation has emerged as Nick Reiner pleads not guilty to his parents’ murder

A new detail has emerged in the case against Nick Reiner as he pleaded not guilty for a second time to the murders of his parents, filmmaker Rob Reiner and Michele Singer.

The 32-year-old is accused of killing the couple, who were found dead at their Los Angeles home on 14th December. Rob, 78, was best known for directing films including When Harry Met Sally, while Michele, 70, had been married to him for 36 years.

Nick was required to enter his plea again after the original murder case was replaced by charges brought by a grand jury, which were unsealed on Wednesday.

The new indictment alleges that Nick “lay in wait” for his parents before the fatal attack, adding a particularly sinister new element to the case.

Nick has remained in custody without bail since his arrest, which happened just hours after Rob and Michele were found fatally stabbed at their Brentwood home. If convicted, Nick could face life in prison without the possibility of parole or potentially the death penalty.

The grand jury indictment represents a significant development in the case. It allows prosecutors to bypass California’s preliminary hearing process, where evidence would otherwise be presented publicly.

Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman described the alleged killing as an extraordinary betrayal.

“This was a profound betrayal by someone who was loved and trusted by the very people he is accused of killing,” he said in a statement. “We hope that by having a grand jury return an indictment in this case it will bring us one step closer to a trial and achieving justice.”

Despite the new charges, the indictment doesn’t reveal much more about what allegedly happened inside the family home. Crucially, it does not explain how or why Nick allegedly lay in wait for his parents.

The allegation could nevertheless have major consequences. Alongside the other circumstances outlined in the indictment, it means Nick is eligible for the death penalty, although prosecutors have not confirmed whether they intend to seek it.

The indictment also alleges that a knife was used in the killings. Authorities had previously said Rob and Michele had been stabbed.

Nick has denied the allegations by pleading not guilty.
