How long drunk driver who killed newlywed bride was sentenced for, and what she’s said since

Newly released police footage of the woman who killed a newlywed bride in a drunk driving crash has gone viral, putting the case back in the spotlight more than three years after the tragedy.

Jamie Komoroski was sentenced to 25 years in prison after crashing into a golf cart carrying newlyweds Samantha Miller and Aric Hutchinson in South Carolina in April 2023.

The footage, which was released last week, shows some of the immediate aftermath of the crash, but Komoroski’s sentence and what she has said about the crash since remain at the centre of the case.

Samantha had married Aric just hours before the crash on April 28, 2023. The couple were being driven back to their rental home by members of Aric’s family at around 10pm when Komoroski’s car hit the back of the golf cart. Samantha was pronounced dead at the scene. Aric and two relatives were injured.

Komoroski was instead taken to the Medical University of South Carolina, where blood was taken and sent to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division for testing. Her blood alcohol concentration was found to be 0.261 per cent, more than three times the legal limit.

What sentence did Jamie Komoroski get?

Komoroski pleaded guilty to felony DUI, two counts of DUI causing great bodily injury or death and reckless homicide.

She was sentenced at Charleston County Courthouse to 25 years in prison for felony DUI resulting in death.

Judge Deadre Jefferson also sentenced her to 15 years for each of the two DUI charges involving great bodily injury, as well as 10 years for reckless homicide.

However, the sentences are concurrent, meaning they are served at the same time. Komoroski will therefore spend 25 years in prison rather than the individual sentences being added together.

Her sentence came after she admitted responsibility for the crash and addressed the court about what had happened.

What has Jamie Komoroski said since the crash?

During her sentencing hearing, Komoroski spoke about her regret and said she took full responsibility for her actions.

She also acknowledged that she had an alcohol addiction and admitted that she had selfishly disregarded the impact her actions could have on other people.

Komoroski said she wanted to dedicate her life to helping people struggling with addiction and raising awareness of the dangers of drinking and driving.

She described herself as “devastated, deeply ashamed, and sorry” for her actions.

Following the sentencing, Samantha’s husband Aric said he believed “the punishment fit the crime”, according to CBS News affiliate WCSC.

“I do think she’s sorry,” Mr Hutchinson said. “However, that doesn’t change the fact that Sam’s not here, my wife’s not here, the family we planned, all of our injuries. So that’ll take some time for sure.”

Samantha’s mother, Lisa Miller, also spoke about the lifelong impact of losing her daughter.

“She doesn’t get to come back to life in 10 years or 20 years,” Lisa said. “And we don’t get to come back to life in 20 to 25 years. This is a lifetime.”
