Ghost hunting influencer dies a year after smashing sacred statue in ‘anti-superstition’ stunt

Jiang Xiaorou, a Chinese influencer known for ghost hunting and supernatural content, has died a year after she smashed the sacred statue of a divine being.

Jiang Xiaorou, real name Li Moumou, amassed a massive following of 1.3 million on the app Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok. There, her content centred around all things supernatural like ghost hunting, curses, superstitions and haunted buildings. She routinely attempted to summon spirits at crossroads, claiming she would “completely break the superstitious” beliefs of her country.

In August of last year, the content creator weathered backlash after she destroyed an idol of Guanyin, a Buddhist figure associated with compassion and mercy. She did it as part of an “anti-superstition” challenge where people would intentionally disrupt spiritual sites to test the claims of divine retribution. She also nailed her birthdate and time to dispel “rumours of shortened lifespan.” Jiang Xiaorou was slammed as “disrespectful” at the time.

On July 15, just shy of the one-year anniversary of her controversial stunt, Jiang Xiaorou was travelling from Guangxi to Guangzhou when her rideshare collided with another vehicle. She was rushed to Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, according to local media, where she was treated for severe trauma, hemorrhagic shock, impaired blood clotting, damage to multiple organs, and a serious brain injury.

At the hospital, the influencer fell into a coma and required ventilator support whilst in the ICU. She remained there for a month.

Though doctors tried to save her, with her family appealing for financial assistance amidst mounting hospital bills, her death was confirmed on August 10.

An investigation into the crash is still ongoing, but her family asked that people stop “wildly guessing” about what happened, calling it “excessive speculation.”
