Ranked: The state schools that got more Oxbridge offers than Eton, Harrow and Winchester

Oxford and Cambridge have both published how many offers each school in the country received in the 2025 admissions cycle, and the numbers do not read the way you would expect. Of the 21 schools with the most Oxbridge offers, 11 are state schools. Three of them beat Eton outright. Harrow, which sent 67 pupils to apply across the two universities, came away with no more than 16 offers, fewer than at least 30 state schools managed.

Here is every state school that beat a major private school this year, ranked.

1. Hills Road Sixth Form College, Cambridge: 73 offers

The single most successful school in Britain other than Westminster. Hills Road took 49 Oxford offers, more than any school in the country except Westminster and 17 more than Eton, then added 24 from Cambridge. It beats Eton, St Paul’s, St Paul’s Girls’, Winchester, Brighton College and Harrow.

2. Tiffin School, Kingston: 56 offers

Thirty-nine Cambridge offers, the second highest in the country, plus 17 from Oxford. Beats St Paul’s Girls’, Eton and St Paul’s School.

3. Peter Symonds College, Winchester: 53 offers

Sits three miles from Winchester College and beat it by 14. Also beats Eton and St Paul’s School.

4. Queen Elizabeth’s School, Barnet: 49 offers

Beats Brighton College, King’s College School Wimbledon, Winchester and Latymer Upper.

5. Brampton Manor Academy, Newham: 48 offers

Sent 292 applications across the two universities, more than any other school in Britain, and converted 48.

6. Harris Westminster Sixth Form: 48 offers

A free school with a 29 per cent Oxford offer rate, higher than Eton’s 28 per cent.

7. Woodhouse College, Finchley: 48 offers

8. Brighton, Hove and Sussex Sixth Form College: 44 offers

Beat Brighton College, the private school two miles down the road.

9. Colchester Royal Grammar School: 43 offers

Thirty-seven Cambridge offers against six at Oxford, the most lopsided split of any school in the data. Matches Brighton College and beats Winchester.

10. King’s College London Mathematics School: 38 offers

A few hundred pupils, a 54 per cent Oxford offer rate and more offers than City of London School, Highgate and Manchester Grammar.

11. Wilson’s School, Sutton: 37 offers

12. The Latymer School, Edmonton: 35 offers

The state Latymer, not to be confused with Latymer Upper, the private school it also beats.

13. Newham Collegiate Sixth Form Centre: 34 offers

14. The Henrietta Barnett School, Barnet: 34 offers

15. Colyton Grammar School, Devon: 34 offers

All three match Highgate and beat Manchester Grammar, Dulwich College and Sevenoaks.

16. St Olave’s and St Saviour’s Grammar School: 32 offers

17. Pate’s Grammar School, Cheltenham: 32 offers

Beat both Cheltenham College and Cheltenham Ladies’ College, the two private schools in its own town.

18. The Judd School, Tonbridge: 31 offers

Beat Tonbridge School, the private school in the same town, by eight. Every single one of its 20 Oxford offers turned into a place.

19. Loreto College, Manchester: 31 offers

Matches Manchester Grammar School.

20. The Sixth Form College Farnborough: 31 offers

21. Camden School for Girls: 27 offers

Twenty-one Oxford offers from 49 applications, a 43 per cent success rate against Eton’s 28 per cent.

22. London Academy of Excellence Tottenham: 27 offers

23. King Edward VI Grammar School, Chelmsford: 26 offers

Matches Dulwich College and Sevenoaks.
