This crazy Severance foreshadowing hints at what Lumon are doing with Ms Casey

This show is too clever for its own good

There’s a huge bit of Severance foreshadowing we all missed, and it’s to do with Ms Casey / Gemma and a photograph with a lot of important symbolism if the show is to foreshadow what Lumon are doing in the way I think they are. As things really start kicking off in season two of the show, people on Reddit have pointed out a major moment of symbolism which hints at what Lumon might actually be doing with characters in the MDR department.

In Severance’s first season, Mark rips up a photo of Gemma to try and prove he’s over her. When Mark rips up the photo of Gemma, it’s a powerful and symbolic moment. The photo represents Mark’s connection to his life outside of the company, specifically his late wife, Gemma. By tearing it, he’s essentially cutting ties with that part of his life. Mark’s been so consumed by his work and the mind-wiping procedure that it feels like he’s erasing the last memory of his personal life. The act of ripping the photo also symbolises the loss of his ability to fully integrate his personal identity with his work self, highlighting the show’s central theme of division and the dehumanising effects of the severance process. It’s a heartbreaking moment that really underscores how Mark is struggling to hold onto his past while being forced to compartmentalise his entire existence.

But what it really served for us as the audience was the big twist that Ms Casey from inside Lumon is actually Gemma – Mark’s wife. Or some version of her, anyway.

People on Reddit are speculating that this moment is even more symbolic, with the rip and the rebuilding of the image potentially symbolic of what Lumon could be doing with people – specifically what work might be happening in MDR. A lot of theories around Severance suggest that Lumon are working with clones or cloning, and this might be a major foreshadowing moment of the show implying they rebuilt Ms Casey after Gemma died.

It’s all too much, but the show is so clever I think it might genuinely be true.
