Here’s why Selena Gomez got backlash to her crying video, and why she took it down
‘Apparently it’s not ok to show empathy for people’
Selena Gomez went viral yesterday for a highly emotional video which saw her in floods of tears, as the Trump presidency began deporting Mexican people. Selena Gomez, who is of Italian and Mexican heritage, posted a video to her Instagram that whilst well intentioned received backlash from both sides of the political spectrum. In the end, Selena Gomez took down the video – but here’s a rundown of what went on with it and the backlash explained.
After Donald Trump took office as the 47th president of the United States last week, he instigated a series of extreme rules alongside stripping back protections for a range of minority groups. ICE raids over the weekend rounded up 956 people across numerous major US cities, with Selena Gomez posting an emotional video in response.
“I just want to say that I’m so sorry. All my people are getting attacked,” she said on Monday. “The children. I don’t understand. I’m so sorry I wish I could do something but I can’t. “I don’t know what to do. I’ll try everything, I promise.”
This saga saw Republicans like senate hopeful Sam Parker say that American born Gomez should be deported, which she quickly clapped back to on her story. But it wasn’t just those on the Trump end of American politics who called her out for the video.

But it wasn’t just Conservatives who were angry with the video. On Twitter, Selena Gomez received backlash on her video from those who perceive her to be a frequent culprit of “making things about her”.
