Everyone is talking about Selena Gomez after the singer and actress shared a video of herself crying on Instagram.

She was sobbing hysterically to the camera and the clip has gone mega-viral, but what was she actually crying about?

The 32-year-old didn’t make it very clear, so here’s a full explainer if you’re confused.

This is why Selena was crying on Instagram

On Monday (January 27), Selena took to her Instagram Stories to react to the mass deportation of Mexicans that is currently being carried out in the United States by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

After becoming president for the second time last week, Donald Trump passed a series of new orders to remove illegal Mexican immigrants from America and stop any more from entering across the southern US border.

The crackdown includes deporting more than 5,000 people who have been detained by Border Patrol. Trump has also deployed an extra 1,500 troops to the southern border on top of the 2,500 who are already there to stop people crossing.

Selena’s dad is of Mexican heritage, which is why this has upset her so much. Her grandparents emigrated from Monterrey, Mexico, to Texas in the 1970s, and she calls herself a “proud third-generation American-Mexican”.

Selena deleted the Instagram Story

Selena deleted the video after receiving backlash from lots of conservative commentators who agree with Trump’s new deportation laws.

She then posted another response on her Instagram Story, writing: “Apparently it’s not ok to show empathy for people.”
