Selena Gomez to Pamela Anderson: Celebs react to being snubbed in Oscar nominations

One threatened to quit acting

Despite starring in the year’s biggest cinema flicks, which some might argue is a reward in of itself, Celebrities ranging from Josh Brolin to Selena Gomez have reacted to being snubbed in the Oscar nominations.

After being put off because of the LA wildfires, the Oscar nominations were officially announced on Thursday with the ceremony itself taking place on March 3. Emilia Pérez broke records with 13 nominations, Timothée Chalamet became one of the youngest people to be nominated twice under 30 years old, and Wicked once again defied gravity with nominations in 10 different categories.

But despite the obvious wins – which also included Demi Moore getting her first nomination – some celebs found their work snubbed by The Academy. Here’s what they said.

1. Josh Brolin

Josh Brolin

You might remember that last year Josh Brolin claimed he would “quit acting” if Dune director Denis Villeneuve was snubbed at the 2025 Oscars after missing out on a nomination for the first film.

Well, Dune 2 did receive Oscar nominations this year but Denis was not among the nominated directors that included The Brutalist’s Brady Corbet, Emilia Pérez’s Jacques Audiard, Anora’s Sean Baker, The Substance’s Coralie Fargeat and A Complete Unknown’s James Mangold.

“Apparently, I am going to quit acting because Denis Villeneuve didn’t get nominated,’ he said on Instagram. “This is just how this thing works. It makes no sense to me. That’s okay.”

Despite being angry at the Denis Villeneuve snub, he did congratulate the rest of the team on their nominations.

2. Pamela Anderson

The Renaissance of Pamela Anderson came to a disappointing conclusion yesterday when she was ignored in the Oscar nominations for her work in The Last Showgirl. People are really raging on Twitter, but Pamela seemed content in an interview with Elle.

“Oh my gosh, it’s not something I ever expected. Doing the work is the win,’ she said. “That’s what I like to do, and I think we can lose sight of that sometimes in this whole crazy awards season, but it’s nice to be recognized, and it’s all a bonus.”

Ultimately, Pamela said she was happy with the accolades she’d already received and people finally celebrating her work.

3. Angelina Jolie

Angelina Jolie, who has won two Oscars and been nominated three times, was hoping to add to her trophy cabinet with another award for her part in Maria. She failed to make the cut this time despite winning a Golden Globe.

“Angelina will be devastated … look at all the press she did for the film — she wanted to get nominated,” a “senior” awards source told Page Six. “She did Jimmy Fallon, her first late-night show in over a decade. She even went to the Gotham Awards. She did all these magazine covers.”

Another insider claimed that the snub was the result of Hollywood loving Brad Pitt, explaining: “This just shows that Hollywood is Team Brad. The Globes showed that the foreign press loves her, but that’s not Hollywood. Nobody was going to go against Brad and give Angelina a vote … people just love Brad.”

4. Selena Gomez

Oscar nominations

The controversial musical Emilia Pérez has dominated the awards season so far, but Selena Gomez was notably absent despite the film breaking records with 13 nominations at the Academy Awards.

In an Instagram story on Thursday, Selena posted the nominations alongside the caption: “So incredibly proud of my @emiliaperez family!!”

She’s still got that massive ring though, so you win some you lose some.

5. Kneecap

Irish hip-hop trio Kneecap did not mince their words after being snubbed in the nominations for their semi-autobiographical film that was said to be in the running for International Feature Film and Best Original Song. Responding bluntly on social media, they said “F**k the Oscars.”

Director Rich Peppiatt had a slightly more nuanced reaction, stating: “Clearly we would have liked to have gone that extra step, but the film owes us nothing. We’ve had a fantastic year. To even get close to the Oscars conversation is fantastic. We will have a few drinks today, we will dust ourselves down.”

6. The other Oscar snubs yet to be addressed

People are flocking to Twitter to complain about the Oscar nominations, with a few films, actors, and directors standing out amongst the noise. Arguably the biggest is Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers, starring Zendaya, Mike Faist, and Josh O’Connor.

They are yet to comment on the nominations, but one person raged on Twitter: “Denis Villeneuve was snubbed. Challengers was snubbed. Austin Butler was snubbed. Luca Guadagnino was snubbed. Saoirse Ronan was snubbed. Emilia Pérez is the most nominated film at this year’s Oscars. I refuse to live this nightmare.”

A range of other actors are said to have been snubbed, including Daniel Craig, Danielle Deadwyler, Denzel Washington, Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross, Margaret Qualley, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, and Stanley Tucci.
