Following on from Sons of Anarchy and Mayans M.C., FX has ordered a wild new spinoff titled Legends. And now, the original show’s creator Kurt Sutter has given his verdict. Created by SoA star Charlie Hunnam, Legends will reunite much of the original cast – but there’s a pretty huge twist. Rather than reprising their roles as Jax, Clay and the rest of the gang, the actors will play fictionalised versions of themselves. The premise sounds, frankly, bonkers in the best way: “When the cast of Sons of Anarchy reunites at a fan convention after more than a decade, the line between life and art blurs as the fractured brotherhood finds itself up against a real-world threat more dangerous than anything they ever faced in their show.” Credit: FX Ron Perlman, Katey Sagal, Maggie Siff, Mark Boone Junior, Tommy Flanagan, Kim Coates and Theo Rossi are all returning for the meta reunion, more than a decade after Sons of Anarchy came to an end. Knowing there would be queries about his involvement (or lack thereof), Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter set the record straight in a new Instagram post. “I know the news about Charlie’s show hit today and that [began] some queries about it. I just want to say my piece,” he explained. “I’m not involved with Legends at all, nor should I be. It has nothing to do with the characters I created or the mythology. It is really about the show and the legacy of the show, and quite frankly there are thousands of people who are responsible for that legacy.” Sutter clarified that Hunnam came to him early on in the process of pitching the spinoff to FX to ask for his blessing, knowing that legal reasons would likely prevent them from actually using the original IP (plus, so many of the OG characters died). I have nothing but love for John Landgraf and the folks at FX who have been so good to me, so generous,” Sutter continued. He went on to say “watch this motherf**ker”, adding, “I’ve taken a peek at the script that was perhaps just lying on my wife’s knitting table and it’s so well done and I think you’ll dig it. That’s my two cents. I love Charlie to death and I think you will have mad love for this project as well.” Now all that’s left to ask is when is it out? Sadly, there’s no answer at the time of writing, as it’s only just received the order from FX. We’ll no doubt have a better estimation when Legends starts filming.
