Trump’s inauguration broke strange decades-old rule and it could have ended horribly

The rule is meant to protect the whole of America

Donald Trump’s inauguration ignored a 75-year-old rule that serves to protect the American government from complete and utter collapse after a mass casualty event.

Trump was sworn in during Monday’s ceremony that saw a viral meme about Melania’s hat, a slew of crazy conspiracy theories, and *that* Elon Musk gesture that people claimed was the Nazi salute.

Some of the most powerful people stepped out for the event, from billionaires such as Jeff Bezos and Mark Zuckerberg to Trump’s fellow politicians Hilary Clinton, Joe Biden, and Vice President JD Vance.

But despite the lavish guest list, which even included Logan and Jake Paul, the Trump administration forgot to follow a crucial rule: The Designated Survivor.

What is the Designated Survivor and why didn’t Donald Trump have one?

The Designated Survivor is a political process that was implemented in the 1950s by President Dwight Eisenhower in a bid to protect the American government from the looming threat of nuclear obliteration in the Cold War.

Essentially, during huge events such as the State of the Union addresses and Presidential inaugurations, a chosen individual is always omitted from the guest list and stored in a safe location in case of a mass-casualty event.

Over its 75-year history, the role of Designated Survivor has been filled by the likes of Hillary Clinton, Jim Nicholson, Steven Chu, and Miguel Cardona to name but a few recent examples. The political process even served as inspiration for the ABC show of the same name starring Kiefer Sutherland, Adan Canto, and Italia Ricci.

Now, on to why Donald Trump’s inauguration failed to follow the rule for the first time in years.

According to NBC, “for Trump’s second inauguration, no designated survivor was selected” and the same occurred on Tuesday during Trump’s swearing-in as the 47th President of the United States. No reason for rejecting the rule was given.

Obviously, nothing disastrous happened during the event and all the government officials were safe and accounted for by the end of it. Still, it could have been disastrous for America as a whole if something horrific happened.
