Will Smith has been hanging out with Johnny Depp and everyone has… thoughts

Will Smith and Johnny Depp have been pictured loving life on a yacht together, and everyone has some pretty strong thoughts about it.

Some context to the picture: The two men are said to have been on the boat as they were both special guests at Andrea Bocelli’s 30th Anniversary Concert in Tuscany. They were pictured with Egyptian singer Ahmed Saad ahead of the event.

Andrea Bocelli also shared pictures of Depp and Smith hanging out together ahead of the event on his Instagram story, before Will Smith did a reading for the crowd. Johnny Depp was there as he played guitar during the set.

Of course, two men who have been centred in scandal in the last couple of years were the only possible people to do these roles. In 2022, Will Smith infamously slapped Chris Rock during the The Oscars, and in the same year Johnny Depp was the centre of the Depp v Heard trial, where both he and Amber Heard accused the other of abuse.

A Buzzfeed article discussing the recent picture of Will and Johnny has said everything everyone is thinking: Are we just going to pretend this is ok?

“I’m sick of this,” the writer said. “I’m tired of people acting like this is normal behaviour.” It goes on to list some of the horrible details outlaid in the trail between Depp and Heard and comes up with the shocking! conclusion that, maybe we shouldn’t hang out with men who are found to be like this?

The Buzzfeed writer spoke to a counsellor about why a public comeback of Depp, maybe much like him performing at events and hanging out on yachts with celebs, would be hurtful to survivors. “It reinforces this idea that abusers are not held accountable, that nobody will believe [survivors] and they shouldn’t speak up,” they said. “It’s another slap in the face.”

The comments section of the various posts where this picture has ended up tell the same story, too. “Two horrible people hanging out,” one person said. Speaking of Will Smith hanging out with Johnny Depp, one person said: “Can’t believe I ever defended this man, maybe his career really should have ended after the slap.”

But, the amount of people praising this as some sort of “iconic crossover” is actually shocking. “Awwwww look at them,” said on person on Twitter, who has changed their last name to be “Depp”. Another added: “My life is complete.” Whilst another said: “Find yourself someone who looks at you the way Will Smith looks at Johnny Depp.”
