‘Tampon Takeover’ hits Rad Cam

Tampon bunting on Rad Cam railings in latest Oxfam campaign

The Rad Cam has become the home of activists and protestors in recent times, with the Wom Cam’s infamous ‘I need feminism because…’ placards choosing it as a backdrop last year, and Amnesty International posing outside it to protest about Putin a few weeks ago.

The latest stunt is the handiwork of the university’s Oxfam group which has launched a ‘tampon takeover’ of one of Oxford’s most famous libraries. The group has been decking the Rad Cam’s railings with neon pink tampons strung together as a sort of sanitary bunting.

Ronan O’Donaghue, an Oxfam representative, told the Tab, “In honour of International Women’s Day this Saturday 8th March, we wanted to find a new and exciting way to highlight the issues facing girls in developing countries. Studies from research commissioned by Oxford University has shown that when girls are given puberty education and sanitary products, their absence rate at school can drop from 21% to 9%.

“Sanitary products are such a basic product, and cost very little, but are completely overlooked in weekly groceries shops as unnecessary. We’re using the RadCam, which is a symbol of the education we all enjoy, to highlight a problem that needs to be addressed!”

However, it appears that the university’s staff are not so sure, as reports suggest that maintenance staff have already moved to take down Oxfam’s bunting.

Oxfam’s campaign continues throughout 7th week. For more info on events, including their Pidge-A-Pad event, click here.
