Heartstopper season has dropped on Netflix and people are already busy binge watching the show because it’s so addictive. When it the show was first released last year no one could anticipate quite how popular it would become and it truly now has a cult following that are absolutely obsessed with it. A motif that is really focused upon in the second season is the books that Isaac reads. Isaac is such a bigworm and throughout the season goes through 25 books, that’s more than three books an episode. I wish I could read that fast.

Through his choice of literature we see his character develop and learn things about him just as he learns them about himself. A big proportion of the books he reads focus on youth and boyhood, finding yourself and sexuality. Throughout the season we see Isaac’s relationship bloom with his love interest James, they first bond at the school’s library which again enforces the significance of books to Isaac’s storyline and character development. By the end of the season, Isaac has begun exploring his asexuality which can be seen in the choice of his last book of the season, Ace by Angela Chan. The creator and author of the Heartstopper graphic Novels, Alice Oseman, is herself asexual and has said before that she parallels herself with Isaac.
