Netflix casts Sex Education’s Simone Ashley for the next season of Bridgerton
She’s going to play Anthony’s love interest and I am obsessed
Netflix has announced the casting of Simone Ashley from Sex Education for the second season of Bridgerton.
Simone will be playing Anthony’s love interest Kate. Netflix made the announcement on their Twitter last night, describing Kate as a “smart, headstrong young woman.”
They said: “Get ready to fall in love with Simone Ashley, who will play Kate in Season 2 of Bridgerton. Kate is a smart, headstrong young woman who suffers no fools — Anthony Bridgerton very much included.”
Simone is most well known for her role as Olivia in Sex Education and will play Kate Sharma who is called Kate Sheffield in the Bridgerton books by Julia Quinn.
The second season of Bridgerton will follow the story of the second Bridgerton novel called ‘The Viscount Who Loved Me’.
The story centres on Anthony and his search for a wife. When Anthony is ready to marry, his bride to be’s elder sister, Kate, throws a spanner in the works by attempting to stop the wedding.
So it’s safe to say Simone will definitely be taking on a leading role in the upcoming series and people are loving the casting of a South Asian woman in this leading role.
People on Twitter are celebrating Simone’s casting as a win for representation. One Twitter user wrote: “I’m a brown girl and practically losing my sanity right now because you guys are amazing.”
And Nicola Coughlan who plays Penelope Featherington shared her excitement of the news and tweeted: “This is so exciting!!! Welcome to our new Leading Lady!”
There is currently no release date for the next season but filming begins in March.
